Susan Boyle...you know that chunky, homely, middle-aged British woman that shocked the world with her singing voice and became a You-tube sensation Everyone underestimated her because of her looks, age and style. But she had the pipes to really sing. She put us all to shame by exposing some of our prejudices.
I wonder if Wade Phillips in the end will also make us all reappraise our prejudices. He might just take us where Bill (Captain Charisma) Parcells never could: A Super Bowl title.
Wade not only is uncomfortably rotund, but he has a voice and style that could easily get lost in the crowd. With zero charisma he doesn't exude anything like top-dog leadership and wiggles nervously on the sidelines. He insists on repeating silly defenses of himself and his record.
But the man knows his defensive football like there is no tomorrow and he does tote at least the title of head coach, Dallas Cowboys.
If we lose one of our remaining games and miss the postseason--or get an early escort out of the playoffs--this all will be mute. For every Susan Boyle that breaks through---there are 500 Paula Abduls, and Carrie Underwoods. Almost universally the super bowl coaches and super bowl quarterbacks look the part. Gritty, tough and charismatic.
I have told 100 people I don't see Wade as a head coach. But I'd love to see him blow away my prejudices. It would do humanity some good, perhaps to see Wade hoist a Super Bowl trophy, man-breasts heaving. It sure would do Cowboy nation some good.
If not...next year...there's always Mike Shanahan/Christina Aguilera.
