The longer it takes, the more I think he will be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL.
Not so sure about that. The Cowboys have basically all the leverage here and I truely hope they use it to strike a "fair" deal.
Let me first say that I believe Ware is the NFL's defensive MVP. He's probably our best player and his value to us is 2nd only to Romo. And that's only because of the impact of QB. Ware is a better player.
Back to the deal. Any players true "value" to his team is both a function of his play and the cap dollars he uses up.
We will never get the same "value" out of Ware than we got in 2008 and that's a shame.
The second he signs his new deal, his "value" to us drops significantly. We simply can not let this get out of hand. Every dollar we allocate to his new deal is a dollar we can't spend on someone else over the next 6-8 years.
I've said this many times and will say it again. It will make no diffence to Ware, his kids or his grandkids weather he earns 80 or 100 mil over the next 8 years. It will have no impact on his life style. Zip, zero, nada!
However, it will have an impact on how much talent the Cowboys can procure over that time. In particular how much defensive talent they can surround Ware with allowing him and the team to reach it's full potential over the remaining prime years of his career.
Here are the points that call for a "discount" the Cowboys deserve from Ware's preceived open market value.
1) The Cowboys are tearing up the final year of his deal and not only increasing his 2009 pay, buy offering him financial security for life. If Ware plays out the last year of his deal to seek FA, he risk catastrophic injury and a chance to ever get that deal based on his current ability.
Don't underestimate this point, it's significant.
2) Under the current system, the Cowboys have the hammer (FRANCHISE TAG) and will keep him from ever seeing FA. That wouldn't be a good thing at all, but he and his agent have to understand that's the reality of the situation.
3) Home town/premeir franchise/contending team discount. This is the Cowboys we are talking about. There is a certain added value to playing for us for any player. Especially a premeir player. This applies all the time, but especially when we are a contender. This team has a great shot to win one or more SBs over the next few years. This can have a huge impact on Ware's legacy.
All this would lead me to believe Ware should and perhaps will except a deal a good bit below what he could have as a FA.
I think 80mil over 8 years with a 30 mil SB would be fair. Something that will lock him up beyond his prime years. Almost certainly his last NFL deal.
