Isaiah Austin has Marfan syndrome

Updated: June 23, 2014, 8:44 AM ET

Former Baylor star Isaiah Austin has been diagnosed with a serious medical condition and will not be able to pursue a career in the NBA, it was announced Sunday.

The 20-year-old Austin, who had been projected as a late first-round pick, underwent a standard physical at the NBA combine where his EKG test revealed an abnormality. After additional genetic tests, results came back positive for Marfan syndrome.

The recommendation was that Austin, who is 7 foot 1, quit playing basketball immediately.

"They said I wouldn't be able to play basketball anymore at a competitive level," Austin told ESPN's Holly Rowe. "The draft is four days away, and I had a dream that my name was going to be called."

What an awkward way to end an article:

**He has Marfan syndome. This is what it does. This is why he can't play anymore.** "Marfan syndrome does not affect intelligence." THE END

Very sad, he overcame a lot to excel at Baylor, he was NBA bound it seemed but i guess it was just not meant to be.

Always amazes me how kids can go their whole life playing a sport without something like this coming out.

For this guy's dream to be taken away days before it could become reality, just sucks. :(

A truly sad story. Just brutal.

I know it's secondary..and maybe laughable to some...but I wonder if he can still get a Baylor degree.

The Sixers have five 2nd round picks. I wonder if they might select him just for the heck of it.

Well, there is, at least, some good news for the young man.

Isaiah Austin has $1M 'elite' policy
By Darren Rovell | ESPN.com Updated: June 23, 2014, 10:55 PM ET

Former Baylor Bears center Isaiah Austin, who saw his dreams of playing in the NBA abruptly come to a halt this week, has an insurance policy worth at least $1 million, his agent, Dwon Clifton, confirmed to ESPN.com.

"We will get through this week, and then we'll file the claim and get the ball rolling," Clifton said.
