Issues with Ratliff

Some reports are claiming that the Cowboys want to get rid of Ratliff due to attitude issues.

The problem is that most or all of his 2013 base salary is guaranteed.

Wade Phillips in Houston might want him under one of the following conditions:

Cowboys trade him to Houston for a some scrub player. Houston would then inherit his guaranteed base salary of 5M.

Cowboys trade him to Houston with Dallas paying most of his 2013 salary. The Cowboys get some type of draft pick in return.

Maybe. I think the problem with that line of thought is that teams will just wait us out and get him for nothing.

the only way to trade ratliff to the texans is to trade jerry to them first

we'd be lucky if we could get anything for ratliff. He's a nice player when he's on the field... but that's when he's on the field. He's constantly injured so it wouldn't be a big loss to see him and that huge contract out of here.

Trade Ratliff? Heck, the Cowboys just resigned him to a multi-year extension with a large signing bonus last year.

Heck, they loved him so much they extended him when he had two years left on his deal.

Why would the Cowboys trade somebody they obviously put a lot of time and thought into before making the momentous decision to extend him?

:showme:

Ok. I jest.

I know you are joking....but you are ABSOLUTELY right. We should ASSUME a lot of time, thought, and careful consideration of today and tommorow was part of the exercise a billion dollar organization goes throught when they make decisions. And since that was done....why would they trade him a couple of months after making that decision?

This is a very weak point to make. And actually a quite silly.

Teams have to make contract decisions on a yearly basis and not all of them are going to work out.

The team signed Ratliff early once before and he was one of the best bargains in football for a few seasons. He was extended early to stave off larger salaries down the line and to lock in a perennial pro bowler.

However, telling your 70 year old boss you'll kick his teeth in apparently is frowned upon and has some effect on how you are viewed....

The only thing worse than making a bad decision is being too foolish to admit it and address it.

I think the Texans would easily take Ratliff and eat his guarantee this season. They wouldn't be obligated for much else and he is a great player when on the field. You put him next to JJ Watt and that is flat out scary.

So lets throw our best DL away in TRat, but keep the trash that is Sensy and let him continue to start. Dumping TRat will be a lateral move to another pretty similar player while we can replace other positions with upgrades.

Guess we really wanna be 8-8 for forever.

you can't preach being the right kind of guy and then ignore ratliff going ham on jerry jones. it just doesnt work. sometimes you remove guys to send messages.

even if we do keep ratliff it is a good thing to have this out there for ratliff to ponder. if he doesnt want to be contrite and man up maybe he needs to go play in buffalo. pretty sure they'd give us a 6th and remove his base salary off our books.

if we really are strongly considering a DT in the 1st this isn't a bad plan at all. it frees up much needed cap space to use in other positions.

lateral moves at many positions are fine provided you upgrade in others. it is about the sum total being better not improving every position. and in today's nfl it is really about cost per performance moreso than even quality.

i don't get it either man. :banghead:

If we trade ratliff then the prorated signing bonus is a cap hit. Which will be 6 million, still less than just cutting him.

I wouldn't do anything to Ratliff this year. We cut him then it would be a ton of cap hit of dead money and 6 if we trade him.

I'm not suggesting that they should get rid of Ratliff. That is being reported by the Cowboys own writers on their "Lunch Break" broadcast.

I'm just reviewing methods were they could get around the guaranteed base salary issue.

Ok, so he got up in Jerry's mug.....I'm sure half this board would want to do the same. Joking aside, we really don't know what has gone on since. TRat could've apologized to Jerry personally for all we know, not like we are sitting in either one of their heads.

I do know one thing, it will cost a huge amount of resources to replace TRat with his contract situation, not to mention spending a 1st rounder to probably replace him. This team just has too many needs to replace a player as good as TRat, I would rather replace some of the terrible players on this team.

Understood.

OurGM has given out some truly awful contracts but this one is up there.

Get this scrub out of here...

He's only good for about 5 games a season anyways

I agree

If cutting him is to expensive...keep him, and let him ride the bench

Truly.

Seems we just have to have one at least every other year...

At this point, given the numerous issues with him, I get rid of him by any means necessary.

A shame the guy went so suddenly from team leader to team cancer.

That simply isn't true. You are talking about his FIRST contract extension in 2007. That extended him through the end of THIS season. Before LAST offseason, we gave him a pretty big extension.

If we never signed that second extension, we would be letting him go at just the right time.
