Have to watch it on YouTube but if you click the link, at the 15:40 mark of the video Robert Belt claims the Cowboys were considering two players at 23: Lawrence and C.J. Allen.

If you can believe Broaddus and Belt, what turned out to be Downs and Lawrence could have been Bain and Allen.

Not that it would be an improvement over what we ended up with. I just find the what could have been randomness of the draft fascinating. If it was Bain and Allen does that mean no Barham in the 3rd? Was there another player there with a similar grade or was he the stand alone BPA? Could they have gone Shelton instead? Then that changes the pick at 112. I love this stuff.

I like Bain more than a lot, and the fact he might as well be an amputee to some people doesn’t really bother me as much. His game hasn’t been hindered by arms yet.

But I’ll give the edge to Downs and Lawrence, because Downs is a bonafide, zero-question mark stud, and Lawrence has athletic potential at pass rusher that Allen does not possess at LB.

Still not convinced Bain would have been the pick at #12

Bain and Allen were my predictions. I didn't think they would draft Downs after signing Thompson to a $33M contract, especially since both have similar traits.

As bad as our safety’s have been the last several years, we need as many as possible good ones.

I also figured it would be Bain and Allen. Bain is an absolute game wrecker. His arm length didn't stop him one bit. I love Downs but Bain would have been interesting

I mean, it could have worked out. Shockingly, Keionte Scott was still available at 92. He’d have been a good fit for the Big Nickel role.

Bain, Allen and Scott. Less versatile group overall, but still fills the same three needs that we did in real life.

I do prefer what we did though. Love Downs - a lot more than I liked Bain (though I am a fan of his too).

I think it’s possible after signing Thompson and then drafting Downs, the team may have thought they had too many of the same type of player which made drafting a guy like Scott redundant.

I was thinking Scott too but these reports about Shelton lead me to believe he might have been your 3rd round pick.

I would have liked that draft also.

Though I am really intrigued by Barham. Honestly I just love the idea of having a big 240 pound thumper at ILB who likes to run around and hit people as hard as he possibly can. We have been missing the violence that somebody like Barham likes to bring.

I suspect Parker has very little interest in Bain throughout the whole process.

Although I would not mind Baines I still like that we got Downs. Would have loved to get JRod and a trade down to early 2nd pick a next year first but that didn’t happen. Hope the Lawrence pick pans out well for us. By what I have read if Lawrence turns out half as good as Ware I would be a happy camper
