IRVING, Texas -- Washington running back Clinton Portis, who is close to setting the Commanders single-season rushing record, left Sunday's 13-10 loss at Dallas with a bruised chest.
The Commanders were more concerned with the health of cornerback Fred Smoot, who left the game with a sprained back. Team officials said Smoot would need tests to determine the severity of the injury.
Both Portis and Smoot left in the third quarter.
Team officials said Portis had a bruise in the area between his sternum and shoulder, but did not indicate how serious it was. When he left the game, his injury was described as a bruised shoulder.
Coach Joe Gibbs said it wasn't clear when Portis got hurt, only that it was before halftime. He tried to return in the second half, but had only a 4-yard run on the Commanders first play.
Portis had 10 carries for 32 yards. He has 1,315 yards, 128 from breaking the team record set by Stephen Davis three years ago.
Smoot was hurt on a play when he was called for a personal foul when he ripped Keyshawn Johnson's helmet off trying to make a tackle. After Johnson broke free, Smoot got hurt in the pursuit when he was hit by teammate Sean Taylor.
* Okay, kids, it is NOT cool to laugh when someone get injured! It's classless and boorish (which concepts are really synonymous, but never mind). If you laugh at a guy who gets hurt trying to make a living for his family, you are... well, an Eagles fan. And you do NOT want that blot on your soul.
