Football really is a simple game. Protect the ball, take the ball away, win the game.

Take a look at this chart.

In the last 20 years, all 8 seasons the Cowboys had double digit wins they were plus in the turnover margin. 11 of the 12 seasons they failed to win 10 or more games they were negative in turnovers.

We had 12 total takeaways last season. After just 18 the year before. Dan Quinn's defenses would get more takeaways in one season than what we have done the last two years combined.

I have no idea if this changes this year but they have absolutely no shot to win anything if it doesn't.

That is why I said I want to see the defense be more consistent this year and also improve their turnover rate.

Granted I believe it's more about winning the possession battle more so than turnover battle, but in general they are basically the same thing.

I believe the new scheme will generate more turnovers. We have players that fit the new scheme and the scheme also deploys deception.

...also aggressiveness, adds margin to turnovers. Bltizing, disguising, mixing things up. Eberjoke went full vanilla last year.

Last couple of seasons not much turnovers and allowed a lot of points to be scored.

Not a complicated game to figure out.

What a remarkable waste 21-23 was, if only we invested more at dt and lb instead of saying we've provided you enough to win. Imagine bringing in Wagner 4 years ago and a couple legit dts...

Yes. And you won't win the TO battle unless you are strong in the trenches.

Think about it, what causes TO's? Mostly, disruption and undisciplined play. So, how do you disrupt? DLine, w/ an emphasis on DT. And how do you stop disruption? Strong OL play.

So, who did we have upfront when we had that top 5 D? Hankins, surrounded by DLaw and Parsons w/ Dorance Armstrong bringing 8.5 sacks in a reserve role.

You don't get TO's just because you want them. You get them by disrupting the pocket and having strong S's to clean things up.

Where Jerry's disconnect gets bad is that since the CB gets the INT, he thinks that's all that matters. Any football dude will tell you that INT's mostly come from pocket disruption.

And imagine how strong we could've been if we hadn't drafted Trysten/Kelvin/Sam Williams. It's not who we drafted, it's who we didn't draft.

And no hindsight being used here.

Yeah football is a very simple game. Starting with the original fundamentals: Blocking and tackling. If your team does those two fundamentals better, you are in position to win.

Turnovers are the second layer of football fundamentals. Obviously if you create more turnovers than you give, you are also in position to win.

But we’ve seen some recent Cowboys teams (2021-23) that could get gobs of TOs but they were often offset by the teams mediocre tackling.

If we can ever get all three fundamentals down - blocking, tackling AND win the turnover battle, we will have a team that can compete in the playoffs again.

WHAT GOOD is it to get a turnover and the offense settles for 3 or doesn't get a touchdown???
well it all depends on the circumstances and outcomes , of each TO.
Nobody keeps sensible stats so...........

turnovers are generally good as they keep 1 team from scoring , and aid another team in scoring.
