To be honest, up until the New Orleans game I saw the Cowboys winning a Super Bowl. After that game, I didn't expect much...it is very difficult to do anything in the playoffs with a poor defense.
And so when they lost today I simply didn't care. It was better than last when I really cared whether or not they got into the playoffs. The way I see it the loss today isn't that big of a deal. It just means they play Seattle on the road which I would rather do than play New York at home.
Also, as crazy as it is, this is the playoffs, and I could see the team turning it on and doing something special. But if they don't, or if they only win one or two games, I won't be too disappointed.
But I am very excited about next year, for several reasons:
1. I'll be glad (and I hope very much) for TO to be gone. Trade him or release him, but as much as I was excited about him at the beginning of the year, he just isn't worth the constant talk and trouble he causes. He's not a superstar anymore, and we have some good young receivers that I want to see us utilize.
2. I wouldn't mind seeing Parcells gone. I like Parcells but he just doesn't have the same fire to excite his players that he used to. And if Parcells leaves, what I'd really love to see is a young coach that could be here for a long time. How about Jon Gruden? He is someone I'd love to see. He is a very smart coach, is young, and definitely knows how to motivate his players. Not to mention, he is a defensive-minded coach, which is what I'd really like to see for this team. What do you think the chances of getting him are? Regardless, with a new coach we would get a new defensive coordinator, which I am all for because we simply don't disguise or schemes and blitzes at all.
3. We have a lot of young players to be excited about. Ware is a beast. I think he is one of the best defensive players in the NFL. If we had another pass rusher to complement him I believe he could easily have 15 sacks, maybe more. It is just too hard on him to be double-teamed so often. I think what we really need to do is go out and get some proven talent in free agency to put on the opposite side of Ware. Also I hope and I think Watkins will improve. Not to mention we have a lot of young linemen. Finally, as I mentioned earlier, we have some good young receivers with upside, and of course we have Romo. He is perhaps the most exiting young QB in the NFL today, next to Vince Young and a few others. I would like to see us trade Julius or get another runner that might not be flashy but will fight for yards. I just don't see that from Julius anymore.
I think before this year we were a quarterback away from being dominant. After Ellis got hurt we were a pass rusher away from being dominant. I believe given next year with a new young coach as well as filling the few gaps we have (I really don't think we have many, unlike quite a few other teams in the NFL), we should be contention for many years to come.
Now bring on the playoffs and who knows what will happen there.
