The opening headline makes the extra picks sound like a curse rather than a blessing. Let's be realistic -- it's much better to have extra draft picks than to be forced to resort to veteran free agency to satisfy team needs.

It is a repost and that's too be determined. As of now, I'd say they have some nice comp picks coming.

I thought it was saying the opposite, the compensatory picks not being the 'cheap kind', but actually having real value.

If that's the case, then the headline conflicts with the story line. That's all I'm saying -- it's misleading.

Huh? It's actually saying it's a good thing, because the picks they are getting would be of value allowing them to get good players in the draft.

If the Cowboys play their cards right, they'll likely get four extra picks in 2016, which will help them do what successful teams do: build your roster through the draft and plug holes in free agency, not vice versa.

That's maybe why I was confused with your original post as it relates to the title.

I understand what you're saying and it's well-founded. Kindly excuse the pickyness from an ex-newspaperman. At times, headlines are misleading to attract attention. Hate it when that happens, even though it's common practice.

Even if we do sign Hardy. We should get a 4th and a 5th for Parnell and Carter.

Though im not sure how those things cancel out

Good point. I'm thinking signing Hardy might cancel out the comp pick we'd get from Murray.

Does it go by total value or per year?

I think it is based on total value. It's a wacky system because we know that mega contracts can really turn out to be not that big because they have huge salaries in the later years that are often never paid to the players.

So say we gave Hardy a 1 year deal worth 8 million. I wouldnt have much effect on any picks we would get from Murray, Parnell and Carter. And if we gave him a Melton type deal, he would likely cancel out either Murray or Parnell

I believe that is correct, but nobody knows the exact formula for comp picks except Goodell and his crew. The issue would be if they gave him a Melton type deal but decline the option the following year. My guess is that it is still considered based on the original overall value. Melton's received around 3M but his original contract was close to 30M.

I believe your correct which is why we don't get a comp pick for Hatcher
