I posted this exact sentiment a day or two ago and got slaughtered for it.

Comp picks are a big deal, and building your team through the draft is how you build a perennial contender, not by making a splash in FA.

It's the first week of free agency -- way too early to say that we WILL get any high comp picks next year. We might, or we might get no comp picks at all. You have to wait to see whether we sign or lose any other qualifying players before June 2, and then you have to wait to see what happens with those players next season. Any projections made now are extremely preliminary.

So it had more to do with the players production than the players contract?

Romo's window is 1 season, and very possibly less than that. Just watch the man walk. The team is wise to be future-minded. I applaud it 100%.

Umm, no. Romo has a few good years left as long as his back holds up. He could very well play until he is 38 or so and our line will only get better to protect him. The key here is sticking to the run first game though.

No. Contract is the most important factor. Playing time and "postseason honors" also are factors.

But if we end up signing more qualifying players than we lose, we won't get anything, even if none of them make as much as Murray, Parnell or Carter got. And some of the players who qualify now might not qualify when all is said and done.

I'm just saying that it's way too early to say that we're definitely going to get high comp picks next year.

Henry Melton, Jeremy Parnell and Bruce Carter were all rotational guys AT best and we can get 3 draft picks out of em. Heck ya! That's Jimmy Johnson style!

It's hard for fans to look forward to a future year, but it would be incredibly easy for the executives--especially when they have absolutely no reason to fear for their job.

A wise decision, I'd say.

So how many threads will be be started and then merged to have another war and peace novel thread of.....trade a 3rd and 4th this year for AP. Since we will get them back in comps next year.

free agency isn't over this year, so we don't have any of those picks just yet...if we get hardy (for example), then that 3rd comp is gone

From what I understand, we can currently sign 2 players in the 4.7 Mill/Yr. range and it wouldn't affect our receiving a 3,4,5 & 6. (With the 3 being a potential 4) This is due to the fact that we've already lost 6 of our own who qualify for comp picks considering the contracts they've received. I agree there are other factors involved, as you said, but signing a couple mid-range players will only negate the bottom 2 comp pick eligible we've lost.

No doubt we've been punched in the gut so far this off-season, but there's still a lot of time and more work will be done. You can't help but look forward to next season though where we can potentially have 11 draft picks, 8 of which are in the top 5 rounds and some serious breathing room with the cap.

You are absolutely correct in stating that it's too early to know how the rounds will be distributed on the players we've lost. All I do know is that we'll be holding a heavy hand in some capacity in the 2016 draft. I'm loving how young and inexpensive this team is becoming. We've been suffering through these seasons for a long time now. But our day will come!

People don't want to hear that now. Come the actual 2016 draft they'll be loving those extra picks.
