Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Jets have apparently slapped the franchise tag on defensive end John Abraham. The Newark Star Ledger reported on Tuesday that the team officially notified the representatives for the Pro Bowl defensive end of the move in a letter on Monday.
The Jets, though, have yet to make a formal announcement.
"It wasn't a surprise," agent Rich Rosa, who represents Abraham along with Tony Agnone, told the paper. "John knew it was coming. At this point, we're going to move in the direction John wants us to and that's working toward a long-term agreement."
A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Abraham recorded 9 1/2 sacks before injuring his lateral collateral ligament in a win over Houston on December 5. His ability to generate a pass rush was sorely missed by the Jets, who were without their defensive star for the final six games, including both playoff matchups.
Abraham, who will earn $6.66 million this season, was one of four first-round selections by New York in 2000.
