Lifetime resident here ...
Traffic at a standstill at noon, as I was just driving a mile to the Target. I bailed out, and it still took me 20 minutes to drive home.
The State Fair is pretty great, even though the "world's smallest man and woman" aren't bored eating KF Chicken and watching soaps at the old "freak show" .. (that was what I paid $1 for to see, in 1972 ...) ... And you could buy these little lizards with a "pin" for 75 cents, so you could pin the "live lizard" on your girlfriend and she would freak out (In the scheme of things for you animal rights folks, I'm veggie about vegan now myself, and the fun caused by pinning the live lizard who died a few hours later, was worth the poor lizard's life for his impression on your girl ... meeting his maker a few hours later...)
The Wild Mouse ride was an awesome dangerous little roller coaster. Even in those days the Comet big wooden coaster had insurance issues ... one death in 1960 or something during the whole 40 year run, so they closed it down back then for days/weeks during the fair even in 1972, 1973 and 1974 ... wish it was 1936 again and I had rode it without all the tort lawyers like the libs nowadays shutting it down.
Amazing as a football fan at the fair (I had to go, 1972-4 because I was in a high school band every night in the parade) .. the biggest thrill was watching the film of the previous season's SWC highlights in the Hall of State on film, in a little room. SMU had won the SW Conference, Jerry Levias, Mac White et al in 1971 or 1972 .. Jerry Richardson was a great RB too .. no idea of what the current teams were doing except in the papers, and the McClanahan cartoons each week, which had the sorry teams' mascot all beat up in the cartoon for the SWC forecast (the UT "horns" would be tied on with wire in the cartoon if they lost ... funny. If they lost again, the horns would be hanging off ...)
There were no Cowboys highlights at the fair, via NFL Films, or otherwise. It would be on ABC one week in the preseason via NFL Films. No TIVO then.
I still hear Jon Facenda and the slightly slow-motion highlights of the Boys at the Cotton Bowl back then .. the stirring brass and orchestra (I hear you can buy the CD set off Amazon ...) .. Meredith missed the pass to Bob Hayes, who was held ... And Jerry Kramer was holding the next year on Starr's run ... I hate the Packers ..
