Why cant others?

Everyone acting like we have to draft a player EVERY year that will help right away??

Like it or not... we need to draft for the future just about every year.
We need to draft a WR..... we need to aim the dart for the bullseye(get a real good one - a franchise type WR)... we may have one at QB already.

WR IS our most pressing need IMO.

I agree and would love to grab one of the top WR if one falls to us. I also agree the draft is not about who can start from day 1 but getting talented players for the future. As I mentioned in another post it would not suprise me to see our 1st pick have a limited role this season because I think it will be much tougher for a rookie to crack the starting lineup

And when that happens half the board will be screaming bust just like they did last year.

People do not understand that when you have a good team .... rookies do not start ....

Larry Allen and Darren Woodson did not start for the whole year their rookie seasons ... Larry only started 10 games.

The problem is that people are thinking about when the team was so bad just about every rookie had to start.

This whole having a solid team and rookies probably won't see much playing time is a new phenomenon for the 2000s.

I agree but my concern is getting players for the future and if they can contribute their rookie season then great but what others say or feel means little in the big picture. for example Carpenter was ragged on because he did not start right away, in my opinion I think Carpenter is going to be very good player for us for years to come.

You know it is both sad and funny at the same time.

You bring up the point that at one time (and we are talking just a couple of years ago) We did have to hit on some players in the first couple of rounds.

That is why the Rogers/Peterman draft really hamstrung us.

But here is something else to consider as well.

There was a time when we drafted for backups. Not backups to groom hoping they would one day step up to be starters...but just backups. And not drafting them thinking they were anything but backups.

That whole draft mentality during the superbowl run and cap really hurt us in the future.

I don't mind if we draft a guy and he does not start because there are some good players ahead of him already on the team or because he is still learning the ropes. Just as long as there is something there that lets the staff think he will turn out ok.

I don't like the idea of reaching for players like we have in the past, taking gambles on players because we are reaching or the idea of drafting strictly for backups in the upper rounds.

We, by we I mean the FO, need to be smart and not get to cute during the draft. Get the best BPA available and if that player happens to also fill a possible need than that is just icing on the cake.

Yeah... thats where this thread probably comes from.... everyone was calling Carp a bust and I was thinking to myself?? huh?? how do we/anyone know....

I say draft the Patriots way.... it has served them WELL.... CONSISTENTLY.... they dont fall and hit rock bottom and start over again... they "tweak" and press forward... they ALWAYS put a solid team on the field

I agree, I only see a couple of spots on this team where if we draft a Rookie he could potentially start immediatly.

You also have to remember that some -- sometimes it seems like most -- posters will scream bust when "their guy" isn't the one chosen. Of course, their guy would have gotten a ton more latitude.

Like Parcells said, the draft has become such a cottage industry and such a fascination in itself for so many people, it seems like people have lost sight of what the draft is. You're just trying to add good players that, when they develop, will improve your team. That's about all there is to it. The truth is, any one of a number of players will be good players at every point where you pick. But people will act like their favorite guy is the ONLY one who could possibly be the right selection. That's simply not the way it is, especially the lower you get in the draft.

BTW, that's a totally different discussion than saying that we *have* to grab a WR. I don't agree with that at all. But there are about a billion threads on that already.
