I've said it before: Reaching out for the pylon/goal line is not worth it.

Unless it's 3rd or 4th down, or a true must-score situation, extending the ball out in an attempt to break the plane of the goal line or pylon is NOT worth it.

By reaching out with the football in that way, the ballcarrier is asking for the defense to swat the ball away and force a fumble. And if the ball fumbles and rolls out the end zone - it's a touchback for the defense.

If Terrance Williams had been just six inches away from the goal line, then I could understand. That would have been one thing. But he was far from the goal line; even reaching out wouldn't have scored.

The benefit is NOT worth the risk.

Another pet peeve of mine is when ballcarriers drop the ball in celebration just a second or split second after having crossed the goal line - it's asking for a DeSean Jackson type of fumble - but that's another topic.

just a PATHETIC rookie mistake...this kid hasn't done much to justify his high draft status yet. Soft physically and soft mentally.....nothing new.

It's always worth it if you're smart about it. There's players with amazing field awareness. Williams made a rookie mistake. He wasn't even close.

Of course, a San Diego player reached out for the first down marker and the ball came out when hit the ground. Result: 1st down and its a smart player according to Moose and company.
