Unless it's 3rd or 4th down, or a true must-score situation, extending the ball out in an attempt to break the plane of the goal line or pylon is NOT worth it.
By reaching out with the football in that way, the ballcarrier is asking for the defense to swat the ball away and force a fumble. And if the ball fumbles and rolls out the end zone - it's a touchback for the defense.
If Terrance Williams had been just six inches away from the goal line, then I could understand. That would have been one thing. But he was far from the goal line; even reaching out wouldn't have scored.
The benefit is NOT worth the risk.
Another pet peeve of mine is when ballcarriers drop the ball in celebration just a second or split second after having crossed the goal line - it's asking for a DeSean Jackson type of fumble - but that's another topic.
