JAGUARS NOTEBOOK: Taylor sees his efforts pay off

By MICHAEL C. WRIGHT, The Times-Union

Training camp broke Friday, and for the first time in four seasons under Jack Del Rio, Jaguars running back Fred Taylor didn't.

... Break, that is.

That's good news, considering Taylor entered camp last season rehabbing from an injury after suffering setbacks during two consecutive training camps prior. Taylor flexed his new-found durability Saturday against Carolina, running for 15 yards on four attempts.

Taylor also gained 11 yards receiving.

"We talked about that," Del Rio said. "Him coming into camp healthy for the first time since we've been here. Not having an injury that we had to work through. Not having something, whether it be the knee or the foot, different things that come up when you play that position.

"This is the first year he entered the offseason healthy, had a great offseason and entered camp healthy and has stayed healthy. It's been very positive."

One contributing factor in Taylor's good health appears to be his improved physical condition.

Taylor, 30, hired a personal trainer and changed his eating habits, which allowed him to report to training camp in noticeably better shape.

A fitter Taylor could be just what the Jaguars need once the regular season begins since none of the club's receivers have emerged as the clear-cut go-to option on offense.

Taylor strained his hamstring during a conditioning run before the start of camp, but Del Rio called the injury minor because Taylor never missed a day of practice.

"That was a mild strain," Del Rio said. "He wasn't able to ooh and ahh the crowd on Day 1 and I know he was disappointed in that.

"But he's been out here every day working his butt off."

Line struggles

Jacksonville's offensive line seemed to struggle with pass protection in the first half, allowing Carolina to sack quarterback Byron Leftwich twice.

Panthers defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu penetrated to drop Leftwich for a 10-yard loss on the Jags' second play from scrimmage, drawing boos from the crowd at Alltel Stadium.

Carolina rookie linebacker James Anderson sacked Leftwich on the Jaguars' second drive.

Just before halftime, Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers zipped past Jacksonville tackle Maurice Williams knocking the ball loose.

Defensive end Micheal Rucker recovered and romped 31 yards for a touchdown and a 17-3 Carolina lead.

Etc.

Jags DT Marcus Stroud suffered a bruised heel in the first half. ... The Jags fumbled four times in the opening half and backup QB David Garrard threw an interception. ... Ticket sales reached the 64,073 mark. ... Jacksonville natives Dee Webb and Jamaal ***** of White High played on the second-team defense. ***** entered the game with 2:28 left in the opening half when David Richardson was shaken up after a Nick Goings 19-yard run. ... LB Clint Ingram (calf), LB Pat Thomas (Hamstring), WR Matt Jones (ankle), S Gerald Sensabaugh (ankle), Mike Williams (back), Dan Connolly (dislocated and broken finger), TE Todd Yoder (hamstring), TE Brian Jones (knee) and TE Marcedes Lewis (ankle) didn't dress for Saturday's game. ... LB Sean Tufts, TE Kris Mangum and WR Steve Smith didn't dress for the Panthers.

Watching the game lastnight, I was not impressed with the Jags on either side of the ball.
The defense up the middle seemed suprisingly soft.
I dont know if Carolina has exceptional C/G combos, but they handled the big duo of the the Jags.
Also see some weakness in the secondary. It looks as if they can be exploited, especially Brian Williams.
If we can pressure Leftwich it will be a turnover party...

I've watched both preseason games with the Jags and so far they look like a win. Their offense is really struggling at times, and it's going to take more than two preseason games to get that unit going. Should be a win for us with our defense quickly pulling together as one of the league's best.

With their lack of receievers, I see us being able to play Roy up in the box for a large portion of the game. If we can stuff their running game, they will have a lot of trouble moving the ball.

Im really not worried about the Jaguars at all.. I know a lot of people on here are, but I think we are going to handle them pretty easily.. Their offense is below average and their defense is barely above average, not dominate.. I think we will shut down their offense and get to Leftwich a lot.. He is about as mobile as Bledsoe.. They just don't have many playmakers on offense.. What WR are you afraid of? Matt Jones? please.. TE? nope.. RB? Taylor is good, but is anyone really afraid of him? Leftwich has a good head and a good arm, but no legs and nobody to throw to.. their record last year was inflated because they played, I believe, the easiest schedule in the NFL.. I am thinking we win something to the tune of 31-6, including a defensive TD..

I don't know. 31-6? A 25-point victory? That's certainly possible since it has been done once to a Jack Del Rio team during the regular season when the Patriots beat the Jaguars 28-3 last January. In three years under Del Rio, Jacksonville has only suffered 20+ point losses in three games (including the aforementioned loss). Their average margin-of-loss under him has been 10 points. I also believe that Dallas will win, but I think that it'll be closer to 21-10.

I believe this defense is capable of scoring some points, but I don't think Parcells will let his offense go wild. I'm thinking the defense is going to be the star of the game, but, then if they are, won't the Cowboys' offense have significantly more opportunities?

22 & 31, you may be right!

The Jags have an EXCELLENT defense. You folks that think this team is going to be a pushover on the road are imbibing too much kool aid.

The Jaguars' defense took on the personality of its head coach from day one, a testament to Jack Del Rio's background in defense as a player and assistant coach.
