Jammal Brown-T-Commanders Aug. 10 - 11:58 am et

Commanders RT Jammal Brown will receive an injection this week in his surgically repaired hip.

We're still a month away from the season, but this is an injury to track. Brown underwent surgery last season to repair a hip injury and a sports hernia. He's missed six straight practices and will not play Friday's exhibition opener.

Aside from not being able to make it through the first week of training camp without his first cortisone injection and the rumored chronic knee condition, looks like a great trade for the Commanders.

IIRC, there were people here ridiculing Jerry Jones for not signing him.

I don't think they will be here anytime soon thanking Jerry Jones for his wise decision to pass on Jamaal Brown AND Gaither.

Maybe I'm proven wrong, but I think the Commanders are going to be a spectacular trainwreck this season. I mean they always are, but this time national media members are actually drinking the Kool Aid because of the Shannahan worship and the kid gloves use on McNabb because they feel sorry for the way the Philly fans treated him.

And I'm not just saying that as a Cowboys homer, because I really think Philly and the Giants are going to be a big problem in the division.

I can see the trainwreck in some ways. I don't think the Eagles give up McNabb to a divisional rival for a 2nd round pick, unless they knew he was done and it was the best offer they could get and essentially they were getting a steal. I *think* BOTH of those have to happen for them to trade him, not just one or the other. Brown is problematic and a rookie LT in a division with Cole, Umenyiora, and Ware is a bit problematic.

I also think the defense is going to be the major problem. As I suspected, FO.com really rips into Haslett's defenses in Pittsburgh, New Orleans and St. Louis and backs it with stats. I think the Skins are ill prepared for the 3-4 as well. I think what happens is fans will be initially happy with the Skins blitzing a lot because that's a hallmark of Haslett's defenses, but eventually opposing teams will figure it out and kill it and Haslett won't make it thru 2011, if not 2010.

Still though, Shanny is still a great offensive coach. He'll need the horses to achieve legitimate success and will need a D-Coordinator that can have instance success given his impatience with D-Coordinators. But, I don't see a disaster, more like some more mediocrity.

The Commanders are the bottom-feeders in the division. There is no question about that.

They got names this offseason, but little substance.

Why would anyone think this will be a good year for the Skins? I agree it probably will be a train wreck if there truly are expectations that they will be a much improved team. They have too many holes to fill in one single season. They don't have enough to get in going in the short term and have work to do for long term success.

If Shanahan has a chance to get the Commanders turned around it will take 3 or 4 years to get it done. Shanahan can get it done as a head coach, but I would not let him have too much say in drafting and acquiring players. His track record at that is not too great. Will Danny Boy be patient enough to wait 4 years? Doubtful.

Because they got names, mostly . . .

I hear a lot about the Skins on local sports talk (live in SE VA). Even respectable mediots from the major outlets come on and suggest 2nd in the division is very possible.

I just see so much age all over the Commanders that I really question whether they're going to be able to stand up to a 16 game season in one of the most physical and competitive divisions in the league without physically crumbling at the end of the year. And it's not even age at one position, it's spread out all over the roster... McNabb, Galloway, Portis, Moss, Raubach, Fletcher, Carter, Sellers, Daniels, Holliday. Even aside from age, they have players at critical positions who are coming off of major, career threatening injuries like Brown and Kemoeatu. McNabb has only played 1 full season in the last 5 years, so him getting hurt at some point in the season is a matter of when and not if. Haynesworth is the type of guy who is just going to mail it in when things get tough. A lot is expected of Trent Williams, but if you look at offensive tackles drafted highly the last few years they don't have a great track record of stepping right in. The Thomas, Longs and Cladys are more the exception than the norm. Shannahan is going to do his best General Patton routine, but I think that approach works best with younger players who are looking for an identity, not old vets who already have one foot out the door into retirement.

Another bad part for that team is they have already traded next years 3nd and 4rd round draft picks I believe.

One picked them to win the division on the John Thompson show a couple weeks back and you know Doc Walker was all over that.

Doc Walker has no business being on the radio. He was the worst. Luckily, they stopped broadcasting him in my area.

It was bad when he replaced the John Riggins Show. Riggins was good on the radio, IMO. But Walker was an absolute moron.

The Commanders are always a mystery.

Their defense has played well the last few years, and it seems that little has changed personnel-wise.

Offensive consistency has been their buggaboo. McNabb is a pretty good player. It's clear he's declining, but he's still an improvement over what they've been trotting out there the last few years.

They have a solid trio of backs (Portis, Johnson, and Parker), a WR corps with potential (Moss and Thomas), and one of the better TE pairs in the NFL (Cooley and Davis).

Their line is subpar, but Shannahan has always seemed to get the most out of his OL.

We'll see.......This first game really makes me nervous. I think we outclass the Skins at nearly every position, but they always seem to play us tough....if they get a little momentum to start the year, they'll be a tough out every week.

I think anything can happen in the NFL....I wouldn't be surprised to see 9-7 from them if the cards fall right.

:laugh2: This would certainly be up the Free Agent standards Danny Snyder has set over the years!

Snyder wasn't even around Commanders park this summer.

However, Jamal Brown was an excellent trade value wise. Move down from a 4th round pick to a 6th for a former pro bowl tackle? You make that trade every day of the week when you need to fill a hole (as most people on this board seemed to agree with)

Hopefully Brown's hip is ok, but this is certainly a disturbing sign already that he is struggling with it. RT may end up being on the list of things to draft next year, along with RB, QB, OLB, NT, G.
