James Garner, who died Saturday at the age of 86, was tall, handsome and athletic, all qualities that made for longevity as a leading man.

Garner, a native Oklahoman, came to fame on television as the laid-back Bret Maverick in the 1950s western, went on to film stardom in the 1960s, then returned to television, most notably for an Emmy-winning run in the lighthearted detective series "The Rockford Files."

Shifting easily between comedy and drama, imbued with a sardonic charm, Garner was part of a line of Hollywood leading men, extending back to Cary Grant and forward to George Clooney, who meld good looks, charisma and self-deprecating wit. He played almost all the standard movie and television roles — cowboy, soldier, detective, astronaut, race car driver — but put his distinctive brand on each.

He was a handsome guy. And a very good actor. AMC or Turner usually runs movies when a popular actor passes.

My Childhood is slowly convincing me of my own mortality. As an actor, I loved this guy.

My favorite role he played was probably Jason McCullough in Support Your Local Sheriff, or maybe Latigo Smith in Support Your Local Gunfighter. Tough to say, I loved both of those movies. Among my very favorites.

RIP James Scott Bumgarner (James Garner).

You will be missed.

I remember watching The Rockford Files every Friday night in the 70's when I was a kid. It was a magical time. We would go over to my parents' friends home. They would play cards in the kitchen and I'd be in the living room watching the NBC lineup with my potato chips and such. lol I also remember our local affiliate used to air Maverick weekdays at 5 right before the local news. That was one of my favorite westerns. James Garner was a legend. They don't make them like him anymore.

Loved the Rockford files, remember sitting with my Dad watching them growing up, can still watch the old episodes to this day.

He was also a great driver, you hardly ever see anyone who can pull off the 180 from reverse to forward without stopping in between. Whenever I see that in a show or movie, I always think of Rockford in his Camaro. RIP!

Americanization of Emily was my favorite. A real gem that all too often gets ignored.
