James Marten... why are expectations so low?

Was he that bad in camp/pre-season? Just wondering why I've seen several people on the board with seemingly low expectations regarding his future with the team.

The rule of panic is, unless a guy plays every single week and makes a big play...he's probably a bust.

Forget that the starting O-line looks good. It doesn't matter.

He sucked in pre-season.

But he's got a great background and the team will likely see about moving him inside if he continues to suck at tackle. These BC linemen do seem to work out more often than not.

Because there were several reports of him struggling in camp. Babe Laufenberg said he was easily the worst-looking rookie we had.

Don't worry about Marten. We'll have him up and ready to play somewhere along the OL but still think in time he'll be primary backup at RT. Besides Cowboys very pleased with the very athletic OT Doug Free who being groomed to replace Flozel Adams. Not too sure I want Free starting at LT next year thought so hopefully we bring Flozel back at least 1 more year or maybe a short term 2-3 year contract.

Typical BC OLman. Fits much better at RT or OG than LT, but that said he needs time. I say we resign Colombo and this kid is his backup. Let Flo go and let Free and McQ fight it out for the LT spot. If we are in possition to draft Baker, the best pass blocking LT in the 08 draft, we may have to consider him as well, if we let Flo go.

If the draft had 5000 rounds and our last 5000th rounder made the team but didn't get many plays, he would be a bust after game two. It's just how we seem to do it around here...

When you are drafted by the Cowboys, you better start week one at a Pro Bowl level or you are a bust... that's just how we do it apparently...

Of course.

You forgot to mention that every snap should result in a positive play, if not a touchdown.

And every game should be around 70-0 with no incomplete passes and over 5 yards a carry from every back.

While Spears doesn't get any sacks, he apparently really good against the run. It appears that's the reason Hatcher won't become a starter even though he makes more big-time plays. As a run stuffer, he simply not as good as Spears at least at this point.

Or people didn't think it was that great of a draft pick to begin with. Compound that with his poor performance in camp and it leads to low expectations.

I think people were overly optimistic if they expected Marten, Free or Stanback to contribute this year.

Thankfully, our OL has played so well we do not need him.....let him keep developing.....he has a mean streak....he will improve.

Flo isn't going to take a 1 year deal. This will be his last decent contract and he's going to go for the biggest one he can get.

I really hope Marten is moved inside. The perfet outcome, IMHO, would be for him to win the starting job at LG next year.

I don't think they are low. I think the issue is Free is a better pass blocker right now and considering they are tackles, that is very important. Marten is an explosive run blocker. If he can develop into a fundamentally sound pass blocker, he will be on this team for a long time. Free has run blocking issues, but those tend to be easier to rectify in my opinion. (especially if you already can pass block well)

I think it is funny how someone with the username of Noletime would be inquiring about a BC Eagle?

Regardless, Boston College has done a magnificent job producing offensive linemen in the NFL. Dallas finally have two of them. Marc Columbo, despite his best Flozell Adams impersonation last Sunday with two false starts, has had a really good season. To be honest, I really do not want to know this season how Doug Free, James Marten, and even Pat McQuisitan looks now. Let these young kids grow in practice for the time being.

Some people have more difficulty adapting to the professional game than others. So next season, we should really know what the Cowboys have in James Marten.

The same things were said about Peterman but now he is the second coming of Mike Munchak up in Detriot.

Marten's challenge is he is not very strong but a few seasons in the weight room will fix that.

unfortunately this is the case. the IGS has taken hold of CBZ and between edunces taking out threads left and right and the daily whine about why the media (or 1 person in it) hates the cowboys, this is just a different CBZ these days.
