I couldn't watch last night. Had another obligation I could not get out of. So, I ask, did we see anything that might lead us to believe that James is the certain starter, or that Carpenter might be pushing him for the spot?

Other than kicker and FB, that is the only real competition I see on the team.

I'll say this for James he did a great job on a 4th and 1 of filling the hole and dropping the RB. I thought James did well last night

Carpenter played some on the outside as an edge pass rusher, and that's when I noticed him (looked good). I didn't notice what he did playing in the middle.

Carpenter stood out a few times.

He helped cause the pick 6 from Davis. He blitzed causing the OL to pick him up, leaving Obomese unblocked.

After the Glymph/Ratliff sack, he navigated traffic and planted the RB for a 2 yard gain at ILB, then on 3rd down he lined up at DE and got a pretty good push that forced a quick throw, resulting in an incomplete pass.

Later on he was in and was calling the defense and directing traffic, and you could see him move Elam before the snap and waved him back, after the snap, into perfect position to break up a pass.

And for what it's worth, Canty made the play on the 4th and 1, James just finished the tackle.

Although James looked much improved last night, Carpenter is clearly the better athlete of the two. He rushed several times last night and looked very good at it. He's MUCH faster off the line, down the line, and in a backpedal. He's far better in coverage. His play against the run last night, although extremely limited, was good too. He had one stop at the LOS in particular that stood out...dropped the RB with a quickness (ironically very similar to James' fourth down stop). If Carpenter becomes comfortable and proves he can be a leader of sorts, I'd be worried if I were James. Carpenter is closing in on James.
