This guy is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. His lyrics are every bit as in your face as Johnny Cash was. He is a great songwriter. He wrote "Give it Away" that George Strait made a hit. He wrote a couple that Trace Adkins made into hits too.

This song is popular and won an award at the recent ACM show in Las Vegas. It is a powerful song and was named the Country Song of the Year.

This one has amazing lyrics. The one about cocaine and a ***** will knock you out of your chair.

How about one that is about cowboys? You bet and it is the same kind of raw emotion as the other two.

The opening stanza is awesome. The rest of the song is too.

I replaced it with links instead. I hate when they do that.

I heard in Color on the radio months back and could not wait to get home to download it but this song is what hooked me. They guy is going to make serious waves in music.
I think so too. Any time you can write lyrics like that you have a gift.

Jamey Johnson is a good. I caught wind of him about a year ago and have followed his body-of-work since.

Check out Corb Lund. He's an ex-roughneck from Canada and has been gaining in popularity quite rapidly the last 12-14 months.

Besides, his band name cracks me up... "Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans" :laugh1:

Here's one of my favs of his.

He's also got a version of Ian Tyson's "MC Horses" on a tribute album titled "The Gift: A Tribute To Ian Tyson", that's outstanding.

Don't ask me why but as I was listening to that I kept thinking of Marty Robbins. He doesn't sound like him so I am not sure why I couldn't get it out of my head.

Thanks.

I think if Jamey Johnson keeps writing songs like these he will have an amazing career. I already liked some of his songs, but as soon as I heard "The High Cost of Living" I was hooked.

For anyone who did not listen to the songs check out these lyrics.

I was just a normal guy
Life was just a nine to five
With bills and pressure
Piled up to the sky
She never asked
She knew I’d be
Hangin’ with my wilder friends
Looking for some other way to fly

And three days straight was no big feat
Could get by with no food or sleep
And crazy was becoming my new norm

I’d pass out on the bedroom floor
And sleep right through the calm before the storm

My life was just an old routine
Every day the same damn thing
I couldn’t even tell I was alive

I tell you
The high cost of livin’
Ain’t nothing like the cost of livin’ high

That Southern Baptist parking lot
Is where I’d go to smoke my pot
Sit there in my pickup truck and pray
Staring at that giant cross
Just reminded me that I was lost
And it just never seemed to point the way

As soon as Jesus turned his back
I find my way across the track
Lookin’ just to score . . . another deal
With my back against that damn eight ball
I didn’t have to think or talk . . . or feel

My life was just an old routine
Every day the same damn thing
I couldn’t even tell I was alive

I tell you
The high cost of livin’
Ain’t nothing like the cost of livin’ high

My whole life went through my head
Layin’ in that motel bed
Watchin’ as the cops kicked in the door

I had a job and a piece of land
My sweet wife was my best friend
But I traded that for cocaine and a *****

With my new found sobriety
I’ve got the time to sit and think
Of all the things I had . . . and threw away

This prison is much colder than
That one that I was locked up in just yesterday

My life is just an old routine
Every day the same damn thing
Hell I can’t even tell if I’m alive

I tell you
The high cost of livin’
Ain’t nothing like the cost of livin’ high

I tell you
The high cost of livin’
Ain’t nothing like the cost of livin’ high

Just leave that stuff alone

I am listening to him tonight and I have to say, I honestly feel sorry for people who say the hate country music. It would be a shame to miss out on an artist with this kind of honesty, passion, and angst.

Sorry for the bump.

Reminds of an old song that pops in my head once in a while.

We started the tour out in Denver Colorado
I made the first one but I did not make the second show
Cause I met this girl there that brought about quite a big change
But I OD'd in Denver and I just can't remember her name

I guess you could say that my love life WAS not up to PAR
Too many nights alone had left some PERMANENT scars
She told me she'd love me and I told her THAT I'd do the same
Then I OD'd in Denver and I just can't remember her name

I brought it on myself and I guess that I shouldn't complain
Doc SAYS son you can't do anymore of that cocaine
WELL she made me higher than all of those expensive things
But I OD'd in Denver wish I could remember her name

NOW I turned to other things tryin' to make my daydreams real
But they don't take the place of A woman's face and her feels
She treated me nice and I'D like to find her again
But I OD'd in Denver and I just can't remember her name

YEAH I brought it on myself and I guess that I shouldn't complain
BE DAMNED IF I'LL EVER do anymore of that cocaine
WELL she made me higher than all of those expensive things
But I OD'd in Denver AND I JUST CANT remember her name

Kinda overdid it in Denver and I just can't remember her name
