Jane Slater - It doesn't sound like Rico Dowdle will be back in Dallas

Not sure how long you’ve been following the team but Zeke was a great pick. He had four 1000 yard seasons, including three over 1300 yards. He led the league in rushing his rookie year. He didn’t last long but that doesn’t make him a bad pick. Dez only had three real good seasons.
he was a great player for a stretch, but he was not a good pick.

He was a great player for a stretch of 4 years which made him a very good pick. Even you’re admitting he was a great player for a stretch. Not sure how you can go from saying that to him not being a good pick. He was rookie of the year and had some excellent seasons until he flamed out the last half of his career. Some of you just want to remember his final years. I’ve heard fans say Witten wasn’t good because they only remember his last few seasons when he slowed down.

because of the opportunity cost. what we got from him was not worth the 4th pick. in theory or reality. ramsey, buckner, tunsil have far better returns on investment. and that's before getting to henry. it was just a poor use of resources, even if he produced well. (he did)

Zeke was a great back, but an absolutely horrible pick. You just don't use the #4 overall pick on a RB. Typical Jerry move, and exactly why Dallas has had 3 decades of mediocrity.

We got a lot from him those first four seasons. He was one of the top players in the league. He would have had four straight 1300 yard seasons had he not been suspended for 6 games in 2017. Our 2017 season went down the drain without him. He scored 40 rushing TDs those seasons. To say he wasn’t a good pick is false.

yeah i agree. he was a great player. had he played for us for something other than our only top 5 pick in 20+ years i'd be on the same page. as it worked out though, not a good pick. mutually exclusive things. all good though, we can disagree.

We absolutely love to reward our "stars" with contracts that set the market but if you are just a strong player on a good contract who fights hard and works hard in spite of all the dysfunction we have very little interest.

I guess he just didn't sell enough Jerseys. If only we could bring Fat Zeke back.

It doesn’t matter that he was a top 5 pick and flamed out after a few great seasons. He lived up to his draft status those first few years which earned him a huge extension. Too many fans only want remember what was left of him those last few seasons. We’ll just disagree.

Zeke was not there for 20 years of that. He was selected for Romo. How were they to know Tony would get injured.
It was a good pick at the time.
I did want them to elect a QB with that pick, then a RB, such as Henry in the 2nd round.

But I was fine with Zeke at that time. Mostly a homer pick sine he was with the Buckeyes.

sure it does. for myriad reasons. i'm not sure why you keep harping on fans only remembering the last few seasons when that's not what i've discussed at all. i've addressed specifically that his first few years were great. and that those great years are not worth the number 4 pick. you feel differently, cool. but stop repeating things that aren't relevant or being said.

Zeke was absolutely unbelievable early on. The mistake was paying him that big contract so he could get fat and pack it in. Could you have known what a turd he would become when you drafted him? Not really. Should you have known the turd he would become when you paid him? Absolutely. Every single sign you needed was right there in front of you.

How can four great seasons by an NFL RB not be worth the 4th overall pick? You’re admitting his first few seasons were great but are saying he wasn’t a good pick.

How can four great seasons by an NFL RB not be worth the 4th overall pick? You’re admitting his first few seasons were great but are saying he wasn’t a good pick because of his lack of longevity. Most RBs don’t last long. Gale Sayers only lasted 7 seasons.
because we could have gotten more impactful play elsewhere from a position that costs more. that's it. opportunity cost.

Here's the theory behind drafting & roster building analytics. Draft picks represent savings. You could acquire a great player in the draft or acquire one in free agency. It's far cheaper to acquire one in the draft. This is the cap value of draft picks.

How much savings a draft pick yields depends on what position the pick is used on. A great RB might command $10M in free agency, while a great DE might command $35M.

The #4 overall pick in 2025 will make $7M. Using that pick on a RB saves you $3M, and using that pick on a DE saves you $28M.

This is why you don't use a rare #4 overall pick on a RB, no matter how good he is. It's just poor roster building.

You’re not going to get more impactful play than what Zeke did his first four seasons. He was a big reason Dak played well as a rookie. Had we not taken Zeke, Ramsey would have been the pick and he only lasted 5 years in Jax because he’s a malcontent.

In principal I am in complete agreement. When we drafted him I was not happy. Then I saw him play. He was quite possibly the best player in all of football period and was deserving of the 4th overall pick. There is no way anyone could have been upset with that pick at the time. You could be upset when it first happened and you could be upset after he got his bag. And this is coming from possibly his biggest critic. You gotta at least concede the early greatness.

Agreed. I hate on that fat little turd more than anybody but he was in absolute god mode early on.
