If the 6 million is accurate, I think we could certainly match it or slightly better it and have him come back to his home state.
Not sure how much over 6 million I would want to sign him for though, but what I would try to do is a 3 or 4 year deal at maybe 28 million dollars, with a signing bonus of about 12 million dollars. That results in a proration of say 3 million dollars per year over 4 years, and average base salaries of 4 million per year.
I'd set it for
2 million in 2014 total cap hit is 5 million
3 million in 2015 total cap hit is 6 million
4 million in 2016 total cap hit is 7 million
7 million in 2017 total cap hit is 10 million
you can either make him a june 1st cap hit in 2016 or cut him in 2017. The dead money for cutting him in june 2016 is 3 million in dead money in 2016 and 3 million in 2017. Total savings would be 1 million in 2016 and 4 million in 2017. Unless his play dropped off extremely significantly, you could keep him on the roster until at least 2017.
He also gets the entire salary the Seattle allegedly promised him for two years, up front now. He would actually earn 2 million dollars more in 2014 by coming here and another 3 million next year. So in the first two years he would make an additional 5 million dollars, but we save by only paying him 11 million in the first two years against the cap, 1 million less than seattle would.
This is just my guess, but I don't think the Cowboys want to sign him that long. JA will be 32 years old on April 3rd, so you are basically putting him into a deal to play here until he's 35. If Jerry and Stephen are serious about being cautious committing to players over 30, then I would bet they only gave him a 2 year deal, 3 years max.
My guess is they work out bonuses or incentives on that 2 year deal in Seattle and he ends up going there.
