If the 6 million is accurate, I think we could certainly match it or slightly better it and have him come back to his home state.

Not sure how much over 6 million I would want to sign him for though, but what I would try to do is a 3 or 4 year deal at maybe 28 million dollars, with a signing bonus of about 12 million dollars. That results in a proration of say 3 million dollars per year over 4 years, and average base salaries of 4 million per year.

I'd set it for

2 million in 2014 total cap hit is 5 million
3 million in 2015 total cap hit is 6 million
4 million in 2016 total cap hit is 7 million
7 million in 2017 total cap hit is 10 million

you can either make him a june 1st cap hit in 2016 or cut him in 2017. The dead money for cutting him in june 2016 is 3 million in dead money in 2016 and 3 million in 2017. Total savings would be 1 million in 2016 and 4 million in 2017. Unless his play dropped off extremely significantly, you could keep him on the roster until at least 2017.

He also gets the entire salary the Seattle allegedly promised him for two years, up front now. He would actually earn 2 million dollars more in 2014 by coming here and another 3 million next year. So in the first two years he would make an additional 5 million dollars, but we save by only paying him 11 million in the first two years against the cap, 1 million less than seattle would.

This is just my guess, but I don't think the Cowboys want to sign him that long. JA will be 32 years old on April 3rd, so you are basically putting him into a deal to play here until he's 35. If Jerry and Stephen are serious about being cautious committing to players over 30, then I would bet they only gave him a 2 year deal, 3 years max.

My guess is they work out bonuses or incentives on that 2 year deal in Seattle and he ends up going there.

What he described is a two year deal in real terms. It just spreads out the cap hit over 4 years instead of 2.

I would pay Jared Allen $8m over 2 years no question. 33% over what Seattle is offering. I don't expect he will sign until after the draft at this rate.

This guy is either

a) not playing this year, or
b) waiting until after camp to sign

Surprised it's taking this long. I surely thought he was going to sign with the Seahawks when he went there. I really want him here to be honest. I feel like he can take our D line and make it a strength, somewhat akin to how Waters helped us out last year.

Enough is going to change after the draft. Teams that need him might find players, or they might not and be willing to pay more short term.

I'd wait, too. Wouldn't want to go to a contender at a discount and get relegated to a role player role just because they pick somebody and it's now affordable enough to do so.

Jerry would have pulled the trigger on this deal this is proof there have been changes; I don't care what Jerry says, he's taken a back seat.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, as I haven't read every post in the thread but, any chance Jared Allen will make his decision well into/after training camp ala Brian Waters?

Personally, I would not backload a deal to a player over 30 either, especially one at 32 years old. But that's just my opinion and Jerry Jones has been doing it this way for years anyway.

Doesn't matter. Allen makes no sense.

Exactly. If we were one or two players away, then yes, you take a chance. I would rather groom younger players/draft picks and see them get a chance.

I'm actually surprised New England has not inquired about Allen's services. I just see him going to a team who is close. And we are not close, even with Allen on D.

If Stephen and Jerry are telling the truth about not signing guys over 30 to big money, I think we can forget about JA.

I don't see them paying $6 million a year for a 32 year old DE.............unless they were just blowing smoke.

Allen agreed to a contract with the Chicago Bears.

Didn't see that coming!
