That is the way I look at this Garrett move, just like Avery. Avery was an assistant under Nelly for like 15 minutes before Nelly stepped down and Avery took over. And the Mavs have done nothing but get better and better and better under Avery's tutelage. I was reading through the daily zone a minute ago, and one of the articles talked about the difference between Garrett and all those other coaches who are former players, is that Garrett knew all along he was going to one day be a coach. Remind you of someone? Avery Johnson.

you are way off on the avery and nelson relationship FYI

After spending the 2003-2004 season playing with the Golden State Warriors, Johnson signed as a player-coach with the Dallas Mavericks under Don Nelson. Johnson had played under Nelson from 2001-2003, and it was understood from the beginning that Johnson was being groomed to eventually succeed Nelson as head coach. On October 28, 2004, Johnson retired from playing to concentrate full-time on coaching, and his transition from assistant to head coach came five months later on March 19, 2005.

shhhhhhh, your blowing holes in my theory! No, really, I knew it something like that, but thats still not a long time to prepare to be a head coach after virtually no coaching experience before that. Well, other than being a player/coach, which is what Garrett was all through his NFL carreer, according to everyone he ever played with.

Yeah and on our '94 team had Switzer had some health issues that took him down and since we had Peete as a backup QB also, Red could've stepped in as HC at that point too and decided when to punt or when to go for it.

Then again so could've Nate Newton cept he woulda still been playing in the games too. ;)

I was thinking the same thing yesterday when I heard about the Garrett interviews. Players, coaches and media around both these guys were saying they were going to be excellent coaches someday even when they were still playing. They were right about AJ. Garretts next.
