Jason Garrett's message to Cowboys: team in same spot last season with four to go

Jason Garrett gives the impression that he rarely, if ever, uses his team's place in the standings as motivation. Asked earlier this week if he's spoken to the players about the unlikely, competitive position the Cowboys find themselves in at 4-8, the head coach said the standings are not something he dwells on.

So, Garrett hasn't told his team they are in the same position they were at this stage last season _ one game out of the NFC East lead with four to play?

"We didn't even think about it until coach Garrett brought it up,'' tight end Jason Witten said of Garrett's speech to the team earlier this week. "That's important. It allows you to kind of look at it with a perspective of we were in this situation before.

"Now, maybe we would have been in as a Wild Card or something like that last year. But four games to go, one game back.

"Everything you're playing for is right in front of you.''

Interesting perspective at least, technically true but we are competing with 3 teams instead of one for that spot.

To have even a chance at the division, the Cowboys need either 1) all NFC East teams to lose at least two more games than the Cowboys do the last 4 weeks OR 2) all NFC East teams to lose at least one more game than the Cowboys do the last 4 games AND the Cowboys have to beat the Commanders AND the Cowboys have to hope the Eagles lose at least one of their two remaining NFC East games against the Commanders and Giants so the Cowboys could win any ties based on division record, otherwise it goes to conference record which would most likely eliminate the Cowboys.

Eagles are 3-6 and we are 3-7 in the conference so I wouldn't say "most likely" if it got that far.

Pretty much we have to win out, we have a good shot at the division if we win out...but how much of a chance do we have at that? Not much but the locker room has to take it one game at a time.

The Eagles being 3-6 in the conference is precisely why I said most likely as a opposed to no chance.

For the heck of it, I was playing with the playoff generator.

Dallas beats the Commanders and Jets(or Bills)----and loses to the Packers and Bills(or Jets)
Giants beat the Dolphins---lose to Panthers, Vikings and Eagles
Commanders beat the Eagles---lose to the Bears, Bills and Cowboys
Eagles beat the Giants---lose to the Bills, Cardinals and Commanders

Cowboys win a a 6-10 four way tie for the division lol

Funny thing is, NFC East teams will be underdogs in all of those games so who knows what will happen.

It's just too funny dallas is still in it. Only reason I'd care if dallas won the division is to make for of all the other nfce fans lol.

Same spot, huh?

Where is the 1800 yard rusher?
Where is the career best Tony Romo?
Where is the defense which is #2 in takeaways?
Where is the best offensive line in the NFL?

Furthermore,

When did we lose 8 out of 9 games last year?

I'm fairly certain by "spot" he meant division ranking spot. Then again, one could say, "When were we in last place last year?" :D

NO not same spot--we have no Romo !!!!

True. Here we go again. I can see Jerry after the season just like in 11,12 and 13 talking about being one game away from the playoffs. Lol. Except this time instead of a mediocre 8-8 we are a pathetic 5-11 or 6-10. Puke!

Yeah, I understand what he was trying to say, but he is selling snake oil here. He must drinking some of Jerry's Johnny Blue. He's the Wizard of Oz at this point.
