I was wondering what everyone thought about Jason Hatcher manning up Canty's position? I know he had a third year slump but I think with Canty gone he's gonna prosper and work his *** off to win that spot. I know we'll sign another DE via FA or Draft but I think Jason has the tools to be a better pass rusher than Canty was. Now, what I am worried about is his run stopping skills but we'll see what happens...

Hatcher and Bowen battling for that role should get interesting...

I'm not worried at all. With Hatcher, Bowen, Dixon, and a rookie DE, I have little doubt the play at that spot will not drop off very much if at all.

Don't forget, if we draft a big true NT, or a FA that surprises eveyone, Ratliff can move back to DE.

Well, that looks like what will happen. You don't need superstars at every position. I think Hatcher, with Bowen rotating in will do just fine.

The only other possibility would be that Dallas finds a NT and slides Ratliff over to end.

I vote for Hatcher and Bowen manning the end.

I was watching the Steelers/Cowboys game on NFL network the other day and everytime Hatcher was in, he was always around Big Ben putting pressure on him.

I'm perfectly fine if we start the season with Spears,Ratliff,Hatcher/Bowen,drafted DE,drafted NT and Dixon.

I'm a big Hatcher fan. There's no doubt about his talent -- it's just a question of consistency and mental and physical toughness to hold up playing every down.

Hatcher was a 3rd round pick and has done everything asked of him since he's been here. He deserves the shot to show he can be a starter. Bowen will get a bigger contract so more will be expected from him.

What we do in the draft will tell an awful lot about how the coaching staff feels about our current defensive linemen.

When I have seen him in there, he has usually been on the left side of the D-line. That's my biggest worry.

You will never again see teams as talented as the 90 boys were or as deep. Unless someone gets struck by lightning and has 3 incredible drafts in a row - each like our Dirty Dozen. The CAP and FA ensures that now.
I would LOVE to have superstars or at the least potential superstars at every position but its not even remotely possible.

To think that two mediocre players will battle for such an important position is kinda awful

These guys have decent numbers for not playing full time, hardly mediocre...

Bowen played better last year, I expected more out of Hatcher.

I thought his best year was his rookie year when he was around 290 - 295 and played right end. I hope he gets his weight down a little. I think he is a natural RE. It will be good to see a position battle again.

Did either push the guy in front of them? Nope. Not at all. Those aren't the guys you want competing for a starting job. Decent backups is all they are.

solid statement...

hatcher reminds me of a tolbert type player.

I have always loved Hatchers upside. I expect him to perform as well as Canty did last year and hopefully better. Maybe the prospects of him starting is the real reason we let Canty go and not just the big price tag for keeping Canty.

Actually, I remember that Hatcher was supposed to have been pushing Spears until he got injured just before the 2007 season.

Not sure what happened last year. Maybe Spears elevated his play.

Spears did.

And Hatcher regressed.

I don't think there will be any significant drop-off between Canty and either Hatcher or Bowen. I think both of the guys here will do well, and I think they've earned this shot.

I don't really see a reason to go out and sign a 3-4 DE unless you think that the guy you are bringing in is just as good as Marcus Spears and will be cheaper now than Spears will be.

Otherwise, I would just as soon make a fair deal with Marcus Spears and go with what we've got.
