A lot of fans like to look at the fact that Garrett played for Jimmy (only one season I believe) and believe that Jason is kind of a Jimmy disciple who will bring that kind of coaching back to the team. Seems to me that with all the attention to detail, the dress codes, the expected conduct, and the apparent belief that preparation, rather than motivation, is the bigggest key to winning, Jason is really more like Landry than Jimmy.

Jason certainly shows more emotion than Landry, but in all he is very businesslike and focused on the process like Landry was. Jimmy, on the other hand, was interested in players having attitudes, and essentially didn't care how they acted as long as they came to play.

Landry was the GM of the WLAF San Antonio Riders when Garrett was the starting QB. Don't know how much interaction they had, but it is some connection.

To me Garrett has the perfect mix. He knows when to push and when to praise. He gets the message across without beating a dead horse. He's probably taken a little something from everyone and made into himself. Thats what I see. He is his own man but it comes from many influences and only the best can do that like an art.

Jimmy was an attention to detail guy. And Landry was more of a motivational believer type than you might think.
He didn't provide that firey motivation himself. He preferred to play a different role and keep a certain emotional distance from the players. He had his underlings like the guy in your sig provide that.

Laundry believed that having his players prepared gameplan wise gave them the confidence and motivation to be great vs rah rah and relationships. Don't quite know if it would work with today's NFL players but it surely did back then. He is truly an icon

I didn't know that either. Kind of boggles my mind that I didn't.

I doubt Landry and Garrett had any interraction. Whatever traits Garrett has in common with Landry are just natural to him, and not learned from Landry.

Now THAT was something I did not know.

Tom Landry and John Wooden were very similar in their approach to coaching. They were teachers who did their best to prepare the players by focusing on the details. They were also my two favorite coaches ever (I grew up in L.A. and have always been a UCLA fan).

I hope Garrett has that same attitude and can get the players to buy into his style/system. Like you, I don't know if that will work in today's game but then again I don't know what does work now.

I want to wish you the utmost success in your kangaroo trial. I mentioned Landry and Garrett in the same sentence one time and it was chaos. Pitchforks and torches everywhere. I talked about the similarity of their coaching experience.

I was found guilty.

"Rather than motivation"? I don't think so, I think motivation is a HUGE part of JG's process....
