jaylon, gregory and rico are players with future potential >>> immediate impact.
jaylon had a career-threatening injury but all pro potential.
gregory has pro bowl potential but had a hobby that threatened his career and can still be banned with a test failure.
rico has pro bowl potential but had not played football since middle school and questionable drive.
the cowboys are also the least invested with rico because he is only a 6th round pick.
gregory and jaylon look ready to contribute this year after 2 years for jaylon and 3 years for gregory.

i agreed with all 3 - because of their potential - and still do.

I agree they all have potential to do great things but I think Jaylon and Gregory have the best chance. They can be integral points of the defense. With Crawford moving inside and Gregory possibly starting week 1 says a lot. Jaylon has looked faster and more explosive. Everyone saying he’s at 90%. It’s amazing how the kid has come so far already. This year can be huge for him.

I don't think there is a problem with Rico's drive. He is still raw and his maturity is in question, maybe. Are you willing to deal with the potential headaches in hopes of that talent manifesting itself down the road?

for pro bowl talent at minimum salary, absolutely.
especially since we are not superbowl favorites, well worth 1 spot on the 53.
and it seems he can be used in certain routes right now, at a minimum.

right, and there is a reason they were picked in the 2nd round even given the situation.
rico only costed a 6th, minimum salary and a spot on the 53 in a year that we are not superbowl favorites.

I think what type of athlete Rico is gets way overplayed on this board. His height and speed aren’t overly impressive for a modern day TE when you really break it down. The thing that makes him the “freakiest” is his weight and he is currently working his way up to adequate blocker and still adjusting to the physicality of football in general.

not just his weight, but his ability to get the ball like the leading rebounder in college basketball. he does not make those highlight grabs if not for that ability.

well considering the 2nd round investments, gregory and jaylon should have a better chance.
rico has arguing overcome his biggest barrier when he was drafted - that is showing his talent translates to football from his ncaa basketball leading rebounding.
it is the coaches' job to put him in a position to contribute while he learns the remaining.
it would seem lining him up wide is the natural approach if there are concerns about his blocking.
also if they r worried about his blocking, then putting rush in with the '1st' team makes sense to give rico 2 full preseason games of reps.

I would not lump Rico in with Jaylon and Gregory. Both Jaylon and Gregory were elite players in college that had to over come some things. Rico has not played since Jr High.

jaylon and gregory are 2nd round picks with pro bowl talent that may get there with a reasonably good probability
rico is 6th round pick with pro bowl talent that may there now with a much lower probability.
i would take such a player over players that have much lower potential.
it is risking a 53 spot.
but at least it is risking for something that is a difference maker instead of limited talent.

it is a similar type of thought process to take those 2nd round gambles.

this is similar to my group I call "The Flyers" 3 players where Dallas "took a flyer" in the draft reaching a bit for a risky prospect. Those are Gregory, Jaylon Smith and L Collins

flyers, sure.
this is a chart for success probability for drafting a multi-year starter
it is all a gamble
it is how you gamble
if you only care about winning it all and building a dynasty, then take some gambles like gregory and jaylon.
gambles like lael and rico are no brainers given minimal investment in draft, $ and 53 spot
1st Round - OL (83%) LB (70%) TE (67%) DB (64%) QB (63%) WR (58%) RB (58%) DL (58%)
2nd Round - OL (70%) LB (55%) TE (50%) WR (49%) DB (46%) QB (27%) DL (26%) RB (25%)
3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)
4th Round - DL (37%) TE (33%) OL (29%) LB (16%) WR(12%) DB (11%) RB (11%) QB (8%)

I just know in no way should Jaylon and Gregory be compares to someone that was lucky to be drafted in thee first place. On top of that Jaylon and Gregory are both first round talents and look like such this preseason. Rico looks sloppy on his route running (literally sloppy) and has issues with simple blocking schemes that are common on a high school level.

same approach - invest in potential gamechanger by gambling on questionable player.
it can be players questionable due to injury, drugs, legal risk or experience level.
also, what is the difference between a player who has zero experience vs. a player who may never be able to walk without an AFO again vs a player who may be suspended for life with another failed drug test after he had failed many many tests?

As we speak.....it's an insult to Jaylon and Gregory. Rico is literally competing for a spot on the roster. Rico has not played no where near the level of even competency at his position as Jaylon and Gregory has. Heck Rico is not even the 3rd most competent at his own position.
