From MMQB today:

Cerrato and Snyder met with coach Jim Zorn and defensive coordinator Greg Blache to talk about alternatives; was there any other alternative than Taylor? They then met with cap guy Eric Schaffer to see if they could squeeze Taylor's $8 million 2008 salary into their payroll, and Schaffer assured him they could. At 3:10 p.m., as Cerrato recalled, he placed a call to Parcells asking about Taylor.

"I'd called Bill a couple of months ago, I guess, like a lot of other teams did, doing their due diligence, asking him what he was interested in for Taylor,'' Cerrato said. "But nothing ever came of it. I didn't talk to him again about it 'til this afternoon. Then, during the afternoon practice, I'd say I talked to Bill three times about the terms, trying to work something out.''

We all know the truth about this situation, but with the abundance of proof at this point, shouldn't Jerry be going after the Dolphins now? Surely we could get a few draft picks out of this. It was clearly a lateral move, and there should be some compensation for going after a guy under contract.

I think Jerry and co. knew the deal before Ireland left. Its water under the bridge to me, we have assembled a very good looking team.

I strongly doubt he's "going after" them. As far as we know, he knew the real story when he allowed Ireland to leave and since he never pressed the issue, I would assume he doesn't care.

It probably is more of the on-going payback for getting Jason Garrett. Alot of back-scratching. Too much to me.

I'm sure Jerry knew that BP was calling the shots prior to Ireland leaving. He's no dummy. But as Jerry mentioned when Ireland left, he wasn't going to have a chance to be a GM if he stayed in Dallas for obvious reasons.

It's good that Jerry doesn't stand in the way when his guys are offered promotions. Don't want a negative image when trying to hire new guys down the road.

Don't like the back-scratching either, still don't understand the draft day trade, seemed one sided to me (2 players for a 4th).

Someone with photoshop skills should create one of Parcells as a ventriloquist and Ireland as his puppet.

You know, I seriously respected Jeff Ireland while he was here. If the Miami job is more prestige and power I guess I just can't see it. I was under the assumption (I'm joking of course) that he was going to get to run a team and that was why he was leaving.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather be someone that was praised and valued by an entire organization than to be a figurehead for another organization. I'm sad for him because he really does deserve a shot to be the guy calling the shots.

If he really just wanted to work with Parcells then say so. Don't make it some kind of cloak and dagger charade.

He will. Coach Parcells doesn't stay in one place for long, that is very clear.

Put mildly, he'd have a better chance to become a full-fledged general manager there before he'd ever have a chance here.

And I am sure he will get it eventually. I strongly doubt he went there not knowing how things would eventually develop.

Why couldn't it have been both? He wanted to continue to work with him and get an opportunity he would never receive in Dallas?

I don't know what's so hard to understand .... Jeff Ireland was never going to be a general manager here. This is not an organization for someone who has career ambitions. There is a glass ceiling here. Thecurrent General Manager will never, never be fired until he keels over. He went somewhere where he had a better future.

Maybe Jeff (he gets the promotion now) is just waiting out the Tuna because Bill does tend to get burnt out after a while and jumps ship. Then Jeff can step into the spotlight.

I know he burns out and leaves guys. I know that Ireland will have a better shot in Miami than here. I just think Ireland deserved a real shot right now. What if Parcells stays for 3 or 4 years and in the meantime some opportunities pass Jeff Ireland by?

I don't blame him one bit for wanting a legit shot. He deserves it. I am 100% behind him on that.

What he has now isn't a legit shot IMO.

Jerry made a statement to one of the papers when Ireland left that everyone knew who would really be calling the shots in Miami and that he could press the issue if he chose to, but he didn't want to.

:fact:

This was never an issue. It was clear from the beginning that he was not given 'final say.'

Actually I read a few months back that Parcells was already in the process of training Ireland to succeed him as head of football operations/GM when he (Parcells) leaves after 4 years on the job. Similarly, everyone Parcells brought along would also move up a notch. Of course if the Dolphins still stink after 4 years or a few more, then the ownership might not want any sign of the Parcells era to continue in place. But that's the gamble for any football position; succeed or get fired.

I can certainly understand the desire to let an employee go if he doesn't want to stay with your organization - but it just seems that there should have been some compensation for a lateral offer to an employee under contract.

There's no guarantee that Bill will wear out his welcome this time. As GM, I could see him being in that position for another decade.

This was more about Ireland WANTING to leave and Jerry allowing him to do so because Miami was a better opportunity for him.

Jerry made it clear that Ireland -- or anyone not named Jones -- was never going to be the GM here. So he let him go somewhere that gave him more mobility.

Non issue

Proof is in the pudding, but in this case the pudding is the title. How do you think all these teams get away with Co-Head Coach as a title? There is no such thing! Either you are THE Head Coach, or you're not! ...unless you are a Hydra, then it would be Heads Coach!

Would you feel better if we just traded Fasano for a 4th? Because that's basically what we did.

They knew that Ayodele wasn't going to make the team this year, so rather than waiting until camp to cut him, they went ahead and included him on the Fasano trade. That way he gets a jump start on his Miami career and Parcells gets a guy who he knows what he brings to the table.

Really it was just to help out Akin and get him out of the way here. The trade was for Fasano.

Jerry is not a petty guy. He will just smile and wish him luck and success.....and actually mean it.

The one thing I like about JJ is he is not petty like many of these owners.

Since it was the first pick in the fourth they were able to turn it into a 4th and 5th which then turned into Tashard Choice and Orlando Scandrick.
