Its come to my attention that alot of you seem to think that Jerry's number one priority, over all else, is winning.

I mean.. really?

If that was the case, i would see a man who would do whatever it took to get wins. Not a man who is known for hiring coaches who bow to his final judgement, who came up with the idea of a traveling training camp, and who has brought 1 postseason win to this organization in the past 15 years as GM.

So i give these recent comments of his about the multi stop training camp idea.

Multi-stop training camps may return

May, 18, 2011 PM CT

By Todd Archer

GRAPEVINE, Texas -- Because of the lockout the Cowboys will hold training camp – if there is one – only in San Antonio. As to the future, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the team could return to the multi-city camps.

The Cowboys split training camp between the Alamodome and Oxnard, Calif., last year and also played in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, leading many to wonder whether that contributed to the team’s 6-10 season.

“I liked the travel we had,” Jones said. “I think it was good and I think we will have that in the future.”

Why?

“Because we won three world championships traveling all over the world, so it works,” Jones said.

In 1992 the Cowboys traveled to Tokyo for a preseason game against Houston. In 1993, they played a preseason game in London. In 1994 and ’95 they played preseason games in Mexico City and Toronto.

Now, even trying to ignore the fact that he's comparing multi stop training camps to traveling for preseason games here.. i have to ask, does this sound like a man who's main goal is winning football games?

Yes, it does. It also sounds like you don't agree with him. But that doesn't mean that he's not right, or that his focus isn't in the right place.

Wouldn't that be winning in spite of and not because of?

That team was loaded, they probably could have won 3 Superbowls training inside a volcano.

Sounded to me like a man who got very defensive, very quickly over the question of the split training camp and why he would want to continue doing it. I think there's a good reason why most all teams don't do it.

Jerry hired Parcells to help him get a new stadium. You would think winning would be his biggest motivation for the things he does, but that’s not always true. Jerry Jones is about the $$$. Winning Super Bowls is more like icing on his multi-billion dollar empire cake.

I wonder why Dallas left Texas Stadium.

After all, those Superbowls in the 90s were won with Dallas playing home games in Texas Stadium.

Texas Stadium worked.

I've gone back and forth on this topic. At times I don't think he cares about football as much as turning profit, at other times I think he does. In the end I think it comes down to this:

Jerry cares about winning and turning profit equally.

The difference is, he's an excellent business man and an middle of the road football mind and GM.

What you get is a guy who can rake in dollars but can't do much more than the next guy in terms of churning out a winning product on a consistent basis.

Like Shaq. At one time Shaq was all into the entertainment business as well as basketball. But, because he sucks at entertainment and is good at basketball you get crappy rap albums and movies like Kazam from the entertainment portion of Shaq but also a HOFer from the basketball portion.

Lost in the "he totally cares about money" argument is the fact that winning would equal more money so it doesn't really matter what comes first because both will get him more money. He wouldn't spend any more to "care" more about winning. He can only gain more by winning more. He's raking in money no matter how well the team does but he's not making as much as he would if the team was winning so there is incentive to win more.

As for the comment, it's completely stupid. Honestly can't believe such a wealthy and successful person would even acknowledge he is working on that sort of thought pattern. That's the kind of comment that would get a double take from what's left of Al Davis.

What it sounds like to me is somebody who is stubborn and bullheaded. Jerry heard the criticism last year of how our travelling training camp was his fault and the main reason the team wasn't prepared. So when asked if he'll repeat it, he uses faulty logic (as the OP pointed out) to justify a repeat of actions that were counterproductive to getting this team ready to start the season.

Granted, Wade had a big role in that lack of preparation, but the travelling surely would have undermined any real attempts at a solid camp, had he made any. Given he ran the camp he did, it crippled this team coming out of the gate.

Sure didn't take long for Jerry to stomp on the new "authority" he had supposedly given Garrett. Because I could have sworn I read that Garrett's plans were not to have a travelling training camp, to park it and work hard.

The same people whining about Jerry forcing the team to take ONE additional 3 hour flight to change camp venues in July/August because of it being a "distraction" better also be complaining about the charity work that Jerry has his players do DURING THE SEASON.

Remember this whining when you see Romo, Ware, and Witten wearing Santa hats and visiting sick kids in a hospital in December.

Such a non-factor. Never ceases to amaze me how easily fans can get sand in their __.

quoted for truth

How do we know moving around during training camp is a non factor in todays NFL? Those teams in the 90's were incredibly talented. Our current team clearly is not. what you can get away with when you have a big edge dwindles when that edge is gone. I have asked this question and those of you that claim moving does not matter- the teams that year in year out the last ten years have been the best: NE, Indy, Steelers, Philthy: do they move or do they stay?

there you go again trying to bring common sense into a perfectly unreasonable argument

**NEWSFLASH** JERRY: This team does not have Aikman, Emmitt and Irvin. Get over yourself.

To anyone on this forum that thinks a traveling training camp has been the cause of our failure you should just log off. Coaching has been the main issue and why would it matter if you traveled and practiced? The team has away games so they should get used it early

We went through this conversation just last week and here we go again. I don't think it matter I don't think it take players out of any rhythm heck they travel to the west coast to play pre season why travel back to SA when you are already in Cal?

As for Jerry wanting to win I have no doubts that winning is a priority for those who feel different well that is how you feel nothing anyone says or does is going to change it

it didn't come to your attention in the last thread on this topic that you were a part of?

The last thread about this got closed before i could respond to certain things. Didn't realize we were so big on censorship and control here at CZ, but i figured i'd start a thread about the comments from this article and see what other people's opinions were. Not everyone gets to every single thread, and i've already seen some different thoughts about the subject.

Its the offseason.. and there's no football. You should know by now that we're recycling threads here daily.
