After the Raiders got their man today it left the Cowboys being the only team in the NFL with out a HC. I don't think findind someone is as urgent as it may seem. If Rivera is the man Jerry wants he can wait or even more so, if the Bears fail to lock up Smith Jerry can pounce.

I think the longer this drags out the more likely it is that one of those 2 could be our guy.

he should wait because Rivera is worth it but only problem is that assistants will be hired in the mean time, hopefully none that Rivera would want...

That is the only negative to waiting. However, most first yr head coaches bring in either people they currently coach with and give them a promotion, or people they have played with that currently coach some where in the leage.

I know if an assistant is under contract, a team does not need permission to talk to them about a HC spot, but what about other promotions, say a LB coach that is being targeted for a DC.. can his current team block that?

What does Rivera have going for him that another assistant wouldn't, I'd rather name Mike Singletary head hauncho and Todd Bowles defensive coordinator than sit around and MAYBE get a guy just as qualified as Mike yet lose out on assistants and a staff to sell to free agents firmly in place pronto.

if we havent hired a coach within a week, it means we are waiting on rivera

coming off a superbowl which his defense got them to will be a good draw for free agents

No if its a promotion i dont think the current team can stop them from signing on to another team. if its for the same job i think they can

I would think Jerry is going to try very hard to convince who ever the coach is to retain Sparano and Bowles but your right, filling out a staff could be difficult but I think all you really need to do is offer a guy you want a position a step up according to the rules. I'm sure that rule gets played with all the time.

It's hard for me to judge who would be a great fit. Pretty much anyone we hire at this point, other than giving up a future draft pick to pull Cowher out of retirement, everyone else is just like getting a kid from the draft. No one knows.

I'm against Singletary as the head coach as not only does he lack the experience but if you were to strike his name out, could anyone ever recognize some coach who has only served one year as an assistant head coach in SF?

As a DC I would be okay with it, but I don't think he's prepared for a head coaching position just yet.

This is a very valid point. Good analysis. Hadn't thought of it.

His thinking has to be he can have Phillips or Turner here yesterday if he wants. What's he going to lose by waiting till after the SB to see what happens with Rivera or Smith.

Lovie Smith has no cotract after this season? He would be Judas if he bolted for Dallas.

I'll bet that negotiations will start after the clock says 0:00 if the bears win.

Well, by then there will be few assistants available in case Rivera (or Smith) decided he didn't like the ones on staff now.

With Phillips or Ryan, however, those decisions could be addressed immediately.

I said that would be the one downfall but since NFL rules allow you to interview assistants if it is a promotion you can play with those rules. Take for example Jason Garrett. If Dallas really wanted him all they would have to do is say they are looking at him for the Assistant HC position although we all know he would be the OC and they would not need the Dolphins permission to do so. It's actually done more often then we realize.

How good of a fit is Rivera, do we really want to run the TB cover 2?

He runs a pretty agressive defense. The Tampa-2 element comes from Lovie.

Well it is an offshoot of the old 46 which Rivera is very familiar with seeming he was on the roster for the 85 Bears as was jeff Fisher and Mike Singletary.

I thought Lovie was under contract thru 2007? If not that's our guy. Regardless of what Chicago puts out there it has been stated that Lovie is a Boys fan from way back and this would be a dream job.
