Whether Jason should or should not be playing calls is much different than whether the GM or HC announces who will be calling the plays.

Some seem to think only the HC should announce it. Some think it is ok for the GM and Owner to announce it (since the HC has had chances and has not done so).

Personally I don't care who announced it because it would have come out sooner or later.

And frankly I am not buying the line of advantages of keeping the information secret. Most people already knew it was happening.

If anything this seems to speak of the problem with this teams HC and GM/Owner not getting together enough to put these issues out in a way that it minimizes the scrutiny of the press and fans as much as possible because frankly the way they have went about a few of these things it makes it look like the whole gang is getting out of a clown car before speaking to the press.

I don't see the point in announcing the play caller period. All that does is appease the fans, and give the media something to talk about. Otherwise, to me it's pointless.

I do agree with your point about the HC and GM not being on the same page. Garrett likes keeping things close to the vest, where Jerry just can't help himself.

The way this play calling saga has been dragging out the past few months I'm almost surprised Jerry didn't decide just to let Garrett and Callahan compete during preseason for the play calling duties. He could have had them alternate games and halves as the play caller and see how it went making the final decision on the play caller right before the season opener. I mean what the hell! :laugh2:

I'm happy bill is calling plays. Maybe we can be 50-50 now with run game and pass game. Not 90-10

Jason should be making all the major announcements regarding coaching and Jerry or a spokesperson the others. Jerry's problem is most stuff comes from him rather than the coach and a spokesperson. If he occasionally made comments then ok. People can spin this one way or another but it undermines the coach. If Jason made an announcement that HE has assigned Callahan game day play calling duties AND that HE had reorganized how game plans were developed then it'd wash down better. People would still bang on Jerry but at least it has the appearance of being Jason's call or at the very least his agreement.

OTOH, Brainpaint has a great point of this was an obvious conclusion to the whole story. Doesn't change the fact that the spin is different with Jason delivering the news though.

Whether he gave it up or had it taken away, I'm just glad Garrett is no longer the play caller.

It's a passing league you have to throw more than you run or you won't score enough to win consistently. Being able to run and move the chains in short yardage situations as well as score more rushing TD's would help the Cowboys. The Cowboys bog down in the redzone a lot resulting in too many FG attempts.

Even the playoff team the Cowboys had under Quincy Carter in 03 scored double digit rushing TD's that season with Troy Hambrick in the backfield. You have to pass a lot to win games in todays game but you need some resemblance of a running game to keep the defense honest and to close out games.

I don't have a problem with Jerry announcing this, he is the GM, (although a horrible one) but I don't see a problem with this.

Plus, he should strip Garrett of play calling, since Jerry's trying to find a way to not fire Garrett since he's sucked at it for 6 or 7 years. If you're not performing, you should be put on blast, now if he could just put himself on blast also, that would be good.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally confirmed Tuesday that he's stripped coach Jason Garrett of play-calling duties, and that OC Bill Callahan will call plays this season.

Having stripped Garrett of basically all his power, it's unclear why Jones is even keeping his formerly hand-picked coach around. After mostly resisting interfering during the Bill Parcells years, Jones has become more meddlesome than ever as he goes on 71 years of age. It's made for a nonsensical power structure in Big D, and is steadily eroding the Cowboys' chances of being annual contenders in the rugged NFC East. Jones could reduce the negative effects of his wanton interference if he stopped overpaying for mediocre in-house talent.

Garrett reduced to clip board puppet. LOL Gotta love it. There might actually be hope for this year. Way to go Jerry!

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Callahan confirmed Tuesday he will call the offensive plays in 2013.

It's the first time someone other than coach Jason Garrett has called the plays since 2007, when he was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator. He became Dallas' head coach in 2010 but still held on to the play-calling duties.

"I'm flattered and as I said this a long time ago when we were visiting in January and February, everybody has a stake in this," Callahan said.

"It's a compliment to our staff and it tells you the way our guys work on the offensive side of the ball. It's been productive all the way around. I'm really encouraged, I'm honored and just do the best job for our fans and our team."

Callahan said the last time he called plays he was the head coach at Nebraska.

Garrett, however, wouldn't confirm who the play caller will be. The Cowboys coach said there is no real advantage to revealing that decision in early June. He did say he's on board with every decision made by the organization, however.

Last season, the Cowboys finished 6th in total offense at 374.6 yards per game, but just 31st as a rushing offense (79.1 yards per game).

In the last three weeks, during the organized team activities, Callahan was giving the play calls to the quarterbacks while Garrett stood off to the side during 11-on-11 drills.

When the Cowboys split up in 7-on-7 drills, quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson would give play calls to the quarterbacks while Callahan worked with the offensive line.

We'll be what we need to be, and what we're good at. Callahan ran a lot at NY because he didn't have much of a passing game. He threw a ton when he was with Oakland. Garrett wanted to run the ball more, but when the run doesn't work, it doesn't make much sense to stay with it. If we're scoring points and winning games, doesn't matter if we run or pass.

No one should have made this announcement.

I agree. I knew Callahan would call the plays but the rest of the league didn't need to.

Im not really concerned with the rest of the league knowing, im certain they would have anyway. I say its dumb because now you're just creating more unneeded pressure and tension on our coaching staff. The only people that stood to benefit from them announcing this were the fans and the media.. the only two groups of people that don't matter one bit when it comes to trying to win football games.

Maximize their strengths? Sounds pretty good to me.
