Stash, respectfully to you, not McShay, here's my issue and it begins with McShay being captivated by Golden's speed. Thanks for taking the time to share that.
I don’t often agree with Todd McShay but he and I are of the same opinion.
Matthew Golden, WR, Texas
“Do not think of Golden as just a speedster. He’s fast, yes—the fastest receiver at this year’s scouting combine. But he’s also a crisp route runner with an elite stop-start ability. Give him an opening, and he’s gone. I’ve compared him to Tyreek Hill before, and it’s important to note that he’s the onlyplayer in the draft who can move like that.
The consensus big board has Golden as the 23rd-best player in the draft and the WR3 overall after Tetairoa McMillan and Luther Burden III. But I have Golden as my top-ranked wideout because I see him quickly establishing himself as a no. 2 as a rookie, with the ability to become a true no. 1 with some development. He’s also in my top 20.”

The consensus, by the vast majority, is that MG’s game speed is far from 4.29. I’ve thought it when watching him, heard Broaddus and Belt saying the exact same thing, and even Google (seriously) will give you the same feedback. For fun, I just typed in, “Do scouts think Matthew Golden plays to his 4.29 time?” Here’s the response copy/pasted just now.
While Matthew Golden's 4.29 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine generated excitement, scouts have raised concerns about whether he consistently plays to that speed on the field. Some scouts believe he appears to have a speed closer to 4.4 based on his tape.
This is the commonly shared view right now and there’s way too much smoke for there not to be any fire, and that’s what the tape looks like to me. McShay’s take just comes across as being lazy after viewing a 40 yard run from a track guy wearing spandex and track shoes (big freakin’ surprise, Todd…Todd…Todd). Where was the productivity prior to Bond getting hurt? He peaked coming down the stretch and that’s what people remember. Tet’s productivity for consecutive years dwarfs MG’s.
Was listening to Cavanaugh and Broddus and Jeff asked Bryan to rank his receivers. BB went Tet, Burden, Egbuka, and then Golden. BTW, same ranking as PFF. Since Bryan loves to talk, he immediately commented on why the Cowboys will take Golden and this is his comment verbatim, “Cause it’s something they don’t have”. Now, that clearly insinuates SUPPOPSED FOOTBALL speed. I see Golden as a solid intermediate target, legit #2, but not a guy with Tyreek Hill speed (over-the-top dumb statement by McShay). So, you’re reaching. You are officially reaching for a vertical threat from a guy that’s not a true vertical threat. There’s no switch to toggle that’s going to make the guy Jameson Willams.
The feeling I get when I see the Cowboys reaching in ANY capacity is not good. It’s like watching the 2023 draft when selections felt a bit forced and perhaps a half-round to a round too soon. You should be looking for value worthy of the 12th position in which you are selecting. I think Golden will be a decent player and may slide right into that #2 position, but I also think you are leaving a whole heck of a lot on the table and for a team that relies on the draft, it's just not a prudent decision.
Anyway...enjoy the draft Stash and if your dude gets selected, congrats!
