IMHO, I feel the 28th pick can be utilized best if we use it to grab another 2 & 3. The Falcons are our best option, with picks #48 & #68 almost exactly equalling the #28 pick on the Value Chart. That all depends on if there is someone there that they have to have.
We could still take Felix Jones w/the 22nd pick, then use the #48 to grab a quality CB. We could then either wrap up the #61 & #68 picks to move up in the 2nd, or stay put, & have the other 2nd & the 2 thirds to grab a WR & a NT, Pass Rusher, etc.

I think this would give us the most bang for the buck.

We need to package picks and move up -

(Not Dmac) We need impact pler(s) that can walk in and start. Not Carpenters that are ST backup types.

What quality CB do you have in mind exactly for the 48th pick, and why would a backup RB be our first pick in the draft when we have a greater need at CB and WR?

Not trying to put down the idea, just curious.

No one is going to give up a 2 AND 3. The 1st day of the draft ends after rd 2, so many teams view their 3's as a 1st-rd pick 2nd-day pick. We'd most likely get a 2 and 4 instead.

How about Charles Godfrey? He would be a good pick-up at 48.

Can't say I know much about him, thanks for the tip, I'll try to find out more about the guy.

Broylhill gave him a 1st round talent with 2nd round draft status because of injury. I'm not sure how many 1st round talents Broylhill hands out. I like the way Broylhill thinks though.

I thought about trading both #1's down but got convinced we would be better off getting the BPA with those picks...

I think a guy like Godfrey would be IDEAL IF we got a veteran number 3 CB in FA to go along side of TNew and Henry. It would give Godfrey one year or so to really develop his technique, and in the meantime, he could be a very good number 4 guy.

But with improved technique, he could easily be a number 1 CB for us a couple years down the road. He's got the speed, size, ball hawk, etc., he just needs more polish.

I only want to trade out of the 1st round if we can pick up another 1st round pick in next year's draft

Agreed. I don't see us moving out of the #1's this year unless another #1 next year is on the table.

I think the CB position is so deep this draft, that some players, such as Tracy Porter, Justin King, and even Dominique Rodgers-Cromarte could still be there. There's only 47 picks before that one, and a lot of different needs & positions are going to be out there to be had. I don't believe projecting Felix Jones as a "backup" RB is truly accurate. He would be more like a 1b, just like Barber was to JJ. Once you see the improvement of one Jones over the other, you will not be calling him a backup, believe me. This kid was one of the best all-around running backs in the country last year. With over a 9 yd. average per run, we have to take him. Plus, he's one of the top return men coming out, as well.
After taking a running back with the first pick, and a CB with the second, we definately need to grab a quality NT like Dre Moore. I think he fits in with the quicker DL that Phillips likes, but still has the bulk & brute strength to hold the point.
The next pick is a toss-up to me. We either take another CB, like Zack Bowman, Nebraska, or a big, pass rushing DE like Kendall Langford, Hampton, or Brian Johnston, Gardner-Webb. Langford is a lanky, 6-6, 295 lb. speed rusher. Johnston is stouter at 6-4, 285, but is still a quick, strong DE who is always in the backfield.

Agreed, I don't see a CB or RB starting this year, so with the CB class looking promising I would trade out of the first round this year, at least with one of the picks and try and pick up a 1st and maybe a 3rd for next year. I think 1st round RB are highly over-rated and see it as too much of a gamble to draft one in the first. With Flo up in the air an OT might be one of our biggest need going into the draft.

I don't have a problem with that but I would change the players. I would take a CB with my 1st pick and one of the top guys should be there. Then I would take with my next 3 picks a RB, WR and DT. It would look something like this:
#22nd Dominique Cromartie
#48th Chris Johnson/Ray Rice/Jamaal Charles
#61st Andre Caldwell/Lavell Hawkins/Donnie Avery
#68th Red Bryant

LOL

Because they changed the TV coverage time, the 80th pick is suddenly worth a lot more. Maybe the teams secretly think that a handful of those 63 players taken on the "first day(tm)" will trickle back into the available draft pool on Sunday. Much like the guy in your fantasy football draft who shouts out Tom Brady in the 7th round thinking that he's still available. Hey, we all know that a draft pick at the biginning of the "second day(tm)" is so much more impactful because Mel Kiper is in heat riffing through his "Best Available" list at full volume. You get a much better player when the ESPN camera actually catches Gene Washington announcing the name at the podium instead of just seeing it scroll along the bottom while we get a detailed hourly recap of Brady Quinn's adventure in the green room the day before.

If Jerry were wise, he'd accumulate as many of those coveted early second day picks. If he can dump those pesky late first day picks on other fool GMs, even better.

I like your picks of Cromartie & Caldwell, and I do like the size of Hardy. I still don't think our WR position is so bad that we have to use a 1st rd. pick on one, though. From what I've heard, our CBs were having a hard time covering Isaiah Stanback late in the season in practice, & Patrick Crayton and Sam Hurd are quality twos', notwithstanding Crayton's drops against the Giants. However, speed kills, & we need more of it, so that's why I like the Caldwell pick. Taking Cromartie would hopefully make up for the other Cromartie we had a chance to pick when we took Carpenter.

However, the more of Jamaal Charles I see, the more I really like this guy. He is just as fast as Johnson, but has much better moves & vision. His burst from a standing start in almost Dorsett-like. Once he's in the open, he's gone....and, unlike the speed back we have now, HE gets open.

Since our defensive scheme now depends more on penetration, I would take Dre Moore of Maryland over Bryant, if he's available. He is still big & strong, but is much quicker than Bryant. In fact, he's the only top ten DT who runs under a 5.0 40.
