Jerry Has to Make -- eh -- a Couple Moves

Jerry and the Cowboys have actually been making moves lately that solve problems:

1. Special teams stunk. Coach Joe and Buehler helped fix that mess. But they still have to find a consistent FG kicker. Buehler is going to work at that skill in the off season, and Folk could be back in the running too.

2. Locker room chemistry. I was a scoffer about team chemistry, but it sure seemed to make a difference this year. Getting rid of TO, Pacman and Tank, as well as adding the fiery Brooking, did good things for the team.

3. Finding a deep-threat receiver. He was on the roster all along, but Miles Austin had the proverbial breakout year. If only the supposed #1 receiver had been more productive. But maybe RW will find a way to get on the same page as Romo or will have his role reduced as someone else steps up. I don't want to overblow Ogletree, but from preseason on, he and Romo have been in sync.

4. Find a second TE for Garrett's 2-TE sets. It was supposed to be Bennett, but John Phillips has shown talent. If Bennett can carry his preseason production into the regular season, having 3 quality TEs could pay dividends.

5. Use Felix better. It's still not a consistent thing, but Felix Jones is getting the ball in his hands more and more. The injury to MBIII may have been the cause, but the "more Felix" trend seems likely to continue.

6. Improve the defense. Wade taking over as DC began to pay dividends this year. The defense stopped playing 28 minutes a half and started playing the whole 30. Spencer came on, Jenkins came on, the Sensabaugh signing paid off and the whole unit looked pretty dynamic. Now improve that defense a little more so it doesn't just play shutdown football when Commanders or Eagles are the opponents.

7. Stay healthy. Anyone want to make fun of "Camp Cupcake" anymore? Or "Victory Monday"?

Now Jerry just needs to have a good smart draft, to get the injured guys like Brewster, Brandon Williams and Hodge back to see if they have anything to offer and to hold the staff and team together as tightly as possible. The O-line will need work or at least depth. But like the teams of the late 60s and 70s, you just have to keep hammering on the Super Bowl door, year after year.

If there is no cap we will keep this team together, add our draft picks that were hurt and another good draft and use that one big FA signing we're allowed, and the Cowboys should be fine.

Like I've said before, no major changes are needed. Things just need to be tweaked. The foundation is built. Now let the structure rise from the solid base.

ST did excellant this year with the exception of Kickoff Returns. Coach Joe got crayton of all people to run back punts for tds. Coverage was excellant and Beuhler killed them. I do not count Kickers as ST because they should not be part of the team anyway.

Not sure if "just a tweak" will be enough for the O-line after this last performance.

Agreed, O-L needs upgrade , Tackle replacement for Flo is needed , either Free adds strength and become a LT stud or top draft pick next year needs to be groomed, younger -stronger Guard/Center needed .

Nice post. It's nice to lay it all out and appreciate the huge difference between '08 and '09. Jerry the owner/GM did a very good job. I like that you mentioned the "camp cupcake". I cringe every time I hear people say "You've gotta tackle in training camp!" Simply moronic. This D had a very good year and tackling was good overall. We looked around at the Eagles and others lose players in camp left and right. Injuries can happen at any time, but it's stupid to increase the risk of injury having your own players tackle and lay into each other. Victory Monday's didn't seem to hurt our ability to come back strong and focused either.

This was a year when many demons were exorcised:

Can't win late in the year (Saints, Skins, Eagles)
Wade, Romo, Cowboys can't win a playoff game (3x the charm Philly)
Romo can't stop making mistakes (2nd fewest INTs in the league)
This team has no leaders (Brooking, James, Romo etc.)
We can't replace T.O. (Miles explodes)
Spencer and Jenkins are busts (or the complete opposite)
We're a 3rd place team that will go about 8-8 (utterly UNrealistic)

Here's to hoping we keep making the right moves.

Just need to tweek stuff

Does tweeking include a couple of better O-linemen? Or maybe just a new line coach?

The safety play was adequate, but not dynamic. I wasn't impressed with Sensabaugh. Is thee a better option there?

Inside linebackers were adequate, but not overpowering. Brooking would have been great five years ago, but,...... Carpenter was adequate as the nickle LB, but ??????

Barber has the big bucks. Can he recover to the same level he was a year ago? He was really slow the last half of the season, and Garrett never realized it.

Ole Roy just never contributed as a #1 or #2 receiver. Crayton is a good slot receiver, but who is #2?

Garrett had some great games as a coordinator. He flunked badly in the divisional playoff game. He flunked in the NY Giants game. He flunked in the San Diego game.

I don't think Garrett can be tweeked.
