Jerry Jones: Drafting a quarterback could be 'problematic,' but Cowboys will workout Jared Goff

On possibly taking a quarterback in the draft: "I don't know. I don't know. I can give you a real scenario where it can be real problematic if we do what we want to do and that's have [Tony] Romo play fairly injury free and uninterrupted for the next three, four, five years. Let's just go three, four five. If he plays uninterrupted then you've got a problem if you've picked quarterback this year because you don't know what you got really at a time when he may be entering the markets. There's an example of that this year and so that's one of the things you weigh if you're in our shoes about whether to get interested in a quarterback this early in Romo's career. It can be distorted by the fact that he has had some injury two of the last three years but it's something that I don't have the answer to right now. I'm really hoping that really just the dynamics of the draft and the dynamics of the opportunity will help make this decision."

On going to see Goff: "We're doing a quarterback workout this weekend so we're going to be very hard at it here. ...He operates in a pretty place. I like to have that excuse to go out there. No seriously, we are going to do a workout this weekend. It'll be Goff. Out there before their spring game."

On the Rams moving up for the No. 1 pick: I was surprised but knowing the organization I'm not surprised.

Very interesting...

I think there is a lot of interest here, and I don't think JJ wants to gamble with Romo's health

I'm sure Wade Wilson, Garrett, Will Clay, Jerry, and Stephen (not to mention the defensive guys getting in their 2 cents) have discussed this topic relentlessly at this point.

Goff and Lynch (not sure about Wentz) are already on record as sounding like they would not be too thrilled to be riding the bench for 2+ years after being drafted. If it's 3 years--which is very possible--then you can see where they may just test the market a couple of years later. anyway.

This doesn't mean you for sure don't burn the top 5 pick, if you love the player, but it worth the discussion.

Been saying what Mr. Jones said since the offseason began...they are in a spot I wouldn't envy at all.

So its problematic to draft a QB in the first round in 2016, but it wasn't problematic to draft Johnny Manziel in 2014, as Jerry wanted to do?

Well, perhaps Jerry factored in the idea that Johnny would be out of football and on the road to prison or an early death by 2016, so there wasn't as much of a worry that we'd be developing him for another team.

This quote tells me that they hope they aren't forced to make a decision at #4 between one of the top QBs and somebody else. Like they hope the "dynamics of the draft make the decision for them."

I hope they don't press for the wrong QB just to do it later in the draft, especially in the 2nd and 3rd. Still lots of good linemen likely there.

Unless you are ready to hand the keys to the franchise to a Brian Hoyer type of QB, just stay away from drafting a QB outside of the top 3. Since 2 of them won't be available, that leaves Lynch. No Lynch? Forget about QB. Just draft defense.

Newsflash to Jerry the GM ~ Not drafting a QB is problematic.
His constant usages of "if" & assumptions about Mr. Romo underscores the lack of an overall organizational vision.
The downward spiral of Mr. Romo's career is painfully obvious.
As usual, Jerry the Owner/Fan is confusing Jerry the GM.

It's particularly problematic seeing as how they are going 1 & 2 in the draft.

Ill laugh (or cry)if they pass on a QB in the first for that reason but reach for a guy like Hackenberger or Prescott day 2 with only 4 years of contract controk

I'm pretty sure the scenario of sitting behind Romo for five years came up in interviews with Goff and Wentz - and other rookie quarterbacks for that matter.

And I bet you Goff and Wentz were honest with the Cowboys.

That's why I think this whole "deference to Romo" situation is "harmful" to this franchise.
