It amazes me how you people support Jones no matter what. How many NFL teams have owners who try to run every aspect of the organization & put the head coach on the back burner? Two. Dallas & Oakland. Jerry Jones won three Super Bowls because of the coaching & talent evaluating of Jimmy Johnson--that's it! Barry "Duh" Switzer stumbled into one with Jimmy's team. How many has Jones won since Jimmy's players left? Zero. They haven't even won a playoff game in 14 years! That's the longest drought in team history.
I love the Dallas Cowboys. Have since 1965. How many of you can say that? I love my kids as well. How many of you who have kids would approve of everything they do? If one tries to set fire to the house, will you say, "Well, I love you, so I guess it's OK"? Same thing with the Cowboys. I love them enough to say something when I see the owner taking them in the wrong direction.
Look at the great leaders of history. One of the things they had/have in common is the ability to find people who are smarter than they are in a certain area and delegate the power & responsibility to do their job. Jones' ego won't let him do that. Look at the Steelers. The greatest team in history if you look at Super Bowls. Two out of the last three years. Jones hasn't won a playoff game in almost a decade & a half. The Steelers have had three HCs since the early 70s. They have had the same style, the same quality and consistency.
That's what a great team is all about and this team will NEVER be great as long as Jones is in charge. The only thing that gives me hope is the fact that he's getting old & Stephen Jones is a much steadier person than his dad.
Two issues with your post.
Care to call out/list the
one member of this site that fits the "you people" definition?
When you dig in your heels in on a position like this. One where you're convinced the Cowboys will
never be great under Jones. How is it you can possibly enjoy being a fan?
Here's what I think most the negative Jones people are missing.
1) Jones never has and perhaps never will operate as a true GM. He's a GM in name more so than in practice. Jones is an overseer. He's not breaking down film and evaluating players. He has makes the final call on everything. Who comes, who stays, who goes.
But all these final decisions are simply based on what his "people" tell him. The success of the Cowboys has always been dependent on the quality of these "people".
This approach and philosophy has not changed since 1989.
Yet you still have ***** like this author who want to simply attribute all the positives as a sign that Jones stepped away and all the failings as a sign he was more involved.
2) There are significant benefits to operating in this manner. First and foremost is loyalty. Lets say Jones decided to step away from the team and hire a coach/gm to run the whole show and that person has success. What happens next? That person wants more money, more power and ultimately leaves. See Johnson, see Parcels.
Jones is the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. Like every other owner he is going to have to hire people to run the team. By keeping himself involved with every aspect of the team he keeps himself best qualified to make those decisions.
And that's really the one key point I believe most people miss. Jones isn't really all that different than any other owner. The real important decisions that he makes on his own, are simply who to hire. I believe common sense would suggest his involvement in the teams daily operations and the close working relationship with his subordinates better qualify him to do that.
