Brad Sham asked Jones if he considered naming Garrett the permanent head coach. Jones responded that Garrett's title had been assistant head coach so that the interim coach title is very meaningful.

Interpret?

He isn't going to commit but feels like he has to say something

Jerry isn't aloud to hire Garrett full term during the season due to the Rooney Rule.

I believe that was in response to rather the way they did this would prohibit them in some way from giving other potential HC's interviews, or the job, in the offseason if he decided not to go with JG.

Interim gives Jerry the ability to go for a different HC, in the offseason, if he chooses without having to actually fire him or whatever, I guess.

At least thats what I thought Brad was trying to find out was how this move would effect a potential HC search in the offseason, should Garrett not pan out over the next 8 games.

He emphasized that because if he decides to keep Garrett going into 2011 and not interview a minority candidate, it has to be clear that he was "interim" coach.

Jerry also lit up when Charean Williams asked him if Garrett would be considered as the permament head coach past this season. It was the only time during the presser when Jerry showed some enthusiasm and was positive.

You can tell Jerry really wants him to be the guy.

I think it is Jerry's way of saying...If JG does good he is in contention for the job.

There is no way Jerry would come out and say...No JG is not going to be the coach beyond this year. It would be monumentally stupid for him to say that.

He gets his chance to have an on the job interview so to speak but if you were working somewhere and the boss told you...we are making you the supervisor for the rest of this year but after the year is up we are going to hire someone else to take over for you and let you go...chances are you would just say take the job and shove it.

Now if your boss said, we are going to have you take over as supervisor and it is your chance to make it a perm job title...chances are you are going to bust your butt to do the best job you can in order to secure that title long term.

Hope that makes sense.

Pretty sure you don't have to interview anyone if you promote from within.

I think it's if they're assistant head coach, and it's written in their contract. I may be wrong though.

"That opportunity would be obvious if you stepped back and looked at it and we do outstanding as a team and we have very visible, very tangible success then certainly that's doing your job, if you will, in a crisis situation and that kind of action goes beyond a resume, especially when you're in the foxhole with him, seriously," Jones said. "And so your answer is yes, good success here would enhance his long term prospect." Jerry Jones

I would say that the chances are very poor for JG's good success. He has a lousy OL and can't fix that in 8 games. He won't be here after this season.

By the way I have heard and read that Jerry will have to go by the "rule" if he hires Garrett as head coach next year.
