Jerry Jones: Let's keep debating Romo's playoff record

After coming back from London last November, Cowboys Chief Operating Officer Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] it was his family's fault quarterback Tony Romo had so little postseason success.

In the advent of a new season that kicks off Sept. 13 against the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium, owner Jerry Jones said on the same airwaves he doesn't want the ongoing debate over Romo's postseason resume to rest.

"I am skeptical when we say 'puts to rest' or -- I'm not so sure I want to put it to rest from a personal standpoint," said Jones "It's the discussion. It's the debate. It's the using a great season or a great game to gauge and talk about players as they relate to each other or they relate to other games they played. Let's don't put it to rest."

Romo is 2-4 in the playoffs with four postseason appearances in his previous 13 seasons. At age 35 and having undergone back surgeries in two of the past three offseasons, time is running out. However, Romo is captaining one of the youngest teams in the game with a concentration of youth along the offensive line, thus buying the once undrafted passer out of Eastern Illinois more time.

The intent behind Jones' comments is clear: he doesn't want the discussion over his franchise quarterback to end because he wants Romo to keep adding to his legacy.

"Let's keep it alive," Jones said. "Let's keep discussing it. Let's let him go out there and try to do something bigger here Opening Night than he's done before. All of this is what I'm for that is our eyeing interest on the game of football."

Despite earning a reputation as a big game choker and turnover factory, Romo has been quite the contrary since 2011. His 36 wins are tied with Seattle's Russell Wilson for ninth-best, his 66.2 percent completion percentage is fourth behind Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers, and his 48 interceptions are the third-fewest behind Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger among passers with at least 2,000 attempts. In the past five seasons, the lack of a running game and a porous defense has been more detrimental to Dallas' success.

Jones doesn't let the entire "Romo Debate" influence his evaluation of the four-time Pro Bowler.

"I think the quarterback is such a high-level of critique and our expectations are so much for him to, for the player, or for the position, to, if you will, play above himself," said Jones. "We complain if he's not playing above himself. We complain at the level his contribution is to the team or how much he should be involved or how much he shouldn't be involved. But I think we make it what it is. There's no question it's hard to win without having some excellence some place in the quarterback position."

What continues to impress Jones, who is entering his 27th year of ownership of the club, about Romo is his studiousness towards, not only football, but competition itself.

"He's a student of the game. He's a student, if you will, of competition. He has always analyzed every aspect of his game. I always thought early on the story of him throwing the ball into his couch thousands of times, just a little ol' eight-foot throw into his living room thousands of times. And you can just hear him in there fantasizing and creating situations and throwing the ball. And listen to him talk about getting over a putt and analyzing that putt as it might relate to something competitive in a game.

"Now, he's been doing that. He's good at it. His coaches just can't say enough about how exceptional he is with experience they've had with players. We're going to benefit from this."

How do you avoid talking about ANY quarterback's playoff record and/or success in the playoffs?

Right or wrong it's a huge part of how QBs are viewed.

Where is Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in the hierarchy of NFL signal-callers?

If you want to trust 71 voters from various ESPN platforms, Pro Football Focus and Football Outsiders, Romo is the sixth-best quarterback, behind Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger.

ESPN has put out its annual NFLRank project, ranking the top 100 players in the league, and the Cowboys have done fairly well. Only the Seattle Seahawks (nine) have more players on the list than the Cowboys (six). The Green Bay Packers also have six.

Dez Bryant is the highest-ranked Cowboy, coming in at No. 6 overall and in a tie with Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Only J.J. Watt, Rodgers, Brady, Ndamukong Suh and Rob Gronkowski are rated higher than Bryant.

Left tackle Tyron Smith checks in at No. 29 as the second-best tackle in the game behind Cleveland’s Joe Thomas (No. 17). Tight end Jason Witten was at No. 54 as the third-ranked tight end behind Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham (No. 23).

Zack Martin was the highest-rated guard at No. 57 and Travis Frederick was the second-rated center at No. 66, one spot behind Pittsburgh’s Maurkice Pouncey.

The Cowboys did not have a defensive player crack the top 100.

Maybe that changes if Greg Hardy, Sean Lee, Tyrone Crawford or Randy Gregory have the type of season the Cowboys believe they can have.

May as well just say that Romo is 2-4 with a 3.30 ERA and 140 strikeouts for all of the info you can get out of a phony stat and Jerry's ramblings. Or maybe that's Sergio Romo...?

Right or wrong it's a huge part of how QBs are viewed.

When Philip Rivers and the Chargers go 6-10, you'll never hear a peep about it. His reputation is secure. Same with Matt Ryan and the Falcons.

When Romo and the Cowboys disappoint, he's slammed endlessly. His reputation as a choker will not go away unless he wins a Super Bowl... and even then, he'll have to win it a certain way to get any credit from many of his critics.

Hell, Romo was the best QB in the league last year and it was promptly dismissed. "Well, that's just because he was carried by Murray and the O-line!" Have you EVER heard of another QB with Romo's numbers receive as little credit as he has for such a great season?

Not all QBs are judged by the same standard. Some aren't viewed much differently whether they win a Super Bowl or not (does anyone think Joe Flacco is a great QB now?). Romo's reputation, on the other hand, will be COMPLETELY dependant on whether or not he wins it all.

Jerry, just go out and get us a bus driver so if Romo goes down we won't waste a season.

Thank you.

Not all of us include it as a part of how QBs are viewed. It is wrong, and that's something that should be hammered at consistently. That kind of mindset that Wins/Playoffs/SBs are what define a QB and nobody else just needs to end.

A preppie's response to the mere mention of Jerry Jones or Romo being valid:

I agree it is the ultimate team sport, it is not baseball or the individual sports like golf where a person can control everything. QB as important as a position as it is still relies a lot on what others around him do and some things he has 0 control over he does not play special teams and does not play defense. No doubt a tough position and hard to find a quality QB but winning championships is still about team

So venture on out of the closet. Is Tony Romo a franchise type quarterback and is Dallas likely to take the NFC East right now...?

Just get him a SB. He will go down with the greats.

Yes I think Romo is a franchise QB and very capable of helping this team to a championship it really comes down to do we have a team capable of helping Romo achive it? Rodgers is a great QB but areas of weakness even he can't over come it. Peyton Manning a sure fire HOF QB yes he too has a SB but the funny part if he did not put up great numbers that season to get it but he had the team and guys who stepped up big and made plays. Romo can help this team but this team needs players to step up in the big moments and make the plays
