I would assume they know its hard to justify to this fan base giving MM 5 years, hell 3 years feels like too much IMO. Its apparent as in reports Jerry and Co arent on the same page about bringing him back period, I dont think he will see 5 years but I agree that a new coach would want atleast 2 years so that should be the target if he is returning and he might want more.
what's the need for 5 years? I'm so confused, the 5 years you've already had are enough lol

Jerry has not changed since the Jimmy Johnson days when Jerry said there are 500 coaches that could coach the Cowboys. He believes it. He really thinks the team he builds will be good enough for anyone to succeed. Jerry doesn't need an expensive head coach. Any one can do the job.
That's true, hell the funny thing is, they don't even have to coach, they just have to answer some questions at the opening press conference when the coach is named, and a few questions Jerry wasn't asked because Jerry is the actual coach/trainer/etc etc!! They could hire me and you right now to do the job, we're just figureheads

Don’t see them knocking down Zimms door, we will have the same offense and defense play callers as this year ! ‍♂️
Likely. What's so frustrating is how often it was pointed out this year that this particular offense needs a defense that takes the ball away and forces negative plays to succeed. We had it with Quinn, but that's not Zimm's defense. They need to change something--the offense or the defense--because the front office won't make any big changes.

So what we will get next year is more of the same. All this stuff about injuries is crap; we were getting blown out when we were healthy too.

You are pretty limited with two options.....either promote from within or hire a rethread off the street (Zimm) which is exactly what they did. Guess what, as you might expect Zimm ended the season saying he wished he had more time.

Honestly and I hate to say it but I'm starting to lose a little respect for MM if he's allowing Jerry to pull his strings after what happened this season. If it's me ....I'm telling Jerry 5 years and I choose my own coaches and coordinators, period. Otherwise, I'm out even it can't get another HC job, I'd rather take OC job than let Jerry short-change me AGAIN.
I might agree with this except for the possibility that family considerations and a feeling of loyalty to players are clouding things.

If he really doesn't want to move his family right now, which has been reported in a couple of places, then i can see him biting the bullet and trying to get the best deal he can to stay.

Otherwise i agree. His reputation in NFL circles has been fully restored, there are options for him out there and to take a substandard NFL contract from Jerry after this last year would be foolish.

"Per Rapoport, the sides appear to want to work something out. He believes that it’s just a matter of figuring out the right length and compensation in the contract, though those talks have yet to begin."

The word "just" is jarring.... hehe... yeah "just."
So Mike wants 3-4 year deal

Jerry and Stephen likely offering a one year incentive driven deal

I can see this .......and make no mistake family input/happiness is huge with these coaches.

It's so amusing to me that outsiders think the insiders never know what the hell they're doing, and need the outsiders to remind them of all of the factors meriting attention.

It's like me having no professional medical background being so self-important as to think my wife, an RN, needs to be coached on how to deal with the flu or something.

And of course some are going to say that. But. Not really. Objectively, the nature of this business is to compete within a monopoly arrangement, and compared with the other 31 competitors, the Cowboys FO is neither especially remarkable for its success nor failure... not an outlier.
The Cowboys haven't won two playoff games in a row in 29 years, and are one of only two NFC teams to not play in a conference title game in the 21st Century. Those are most certainly outliers.
