Jerry Jones: no need to move La’el Collins

"I was standing in a tower about 15 feet over them, just that close,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s G-Bag Nation show [KRLD-FM]. “I’m telling you, one place you don’t want to be in this world is in the middle of St. Louis’ defensive line and our offensive line. God dog, you’re talking about some talent and you’re talking about knocking each other’s *** off, they were doing it.”

Jones then specifically praised rookie left guard La’el Collins. However, Jones pumped the brakes on any talk of moving Collins to tackle. The Cowboys like their options with Doug Free starting at right tackle, despite recent foot and ankle issues, and Darrion Weems being the swing tackle.

“Free has every chance to be what we want him to be, we’re just going slow with Free,” Jones said. “And then we want Weems, who has had a little bit of a setback injury-wise, and certainly didn’t have as good of an outing against San Diego as we would like to see. But we had practiced him the whole time at right [tackle] and he ended up playing left because Tyron [Smith] didn’t play.

I believe the thinking is much like many scouting reports before the draft
Collins has the potential to be a decent tackle or a dominate guard
Not to compare the two but that was the exact thinking with martin

“Bottom line is, we got enough moving parts here, it’s not time to be moving La’el, he’s doing so well getting locked in on guard and having his reps there. He gives us so much strength with him and [Ron] Leary. If both of them are there all year long and give us that interior strength, that’s probably more advantageous to us.”

How so? It's not like you can play both of them at the same time.

And if Free or Weems are struggling, wouldn't it be nice to have a talent like Collins ready to step in?

If he's not going to displace Leary, I'd like to see him get some snaps at tackle. And if as I suspect, he's left handed, put him at left tackle while Tyron is out and put Weems back on the right side.

Could be they are just looking down the road and know that Collins will be their left guard and Green will be their Right Tackle.

If we don't see Collins at Right Tackle this year then the writing is pretty much on the wall for Learys future here.

Interesting thing about Weems.
Undrafted.
Signed UDFA with Vikings 2012 - released Late July 2012.
Signed with Patriots 2012 July 27th released September 1 2012.
Signed with the Colts September 3rd to practice squad Released September 18th.
Signed with Denver October 2, 2012 to practice squad.
Cowboys signed him December 5, 2012 from Denvers practice squad.
With Cowboys to present.
I will say he is still chasing the dream and staying on and NFL roster.

Agree Collins place should be at starting LG where he will dominate; let Weems and Green battle it out for backup at RT. As long as Free is expected to start the season, that is fine with me. Leary backing up Collins is a good thing to have.

Collins has never played on the right side of the line before. That is a HUGE difference. Leave the rookie alone for now.

Leary is better than Collins right now, and he's not about to give his spot up. Collins was pushing around guys in San Diego that will be cut soon.

A decent Tackle would be an upgrade over Free.

Is Weems seriously going to make the 53? What about GIbson, is he injured or is he that bad? I think Green will have to be the third tackle, but probably won't be ready until 6 or so games into the season.

Between Ron Leary and La'el Collins, we can certainly rest assured that our LG position is well provided for.

By all indications, Darrion Weems will be fine at RT. That's what he's best suited for, just not so much at LT, especially while physically at a bit less than 100%.

Jason Garrett said in his conference call with season ticket holders, when asked about Collins.
They do not believe in moving these guys around to hinder what they are learning. And that Collins for now, is better suited to stay at OG. They do not want to move him around to try at different positions.
Not other players either if they don't need to.

I just want us to stay healthy. We are debating about who plays LG which both could start on most any other line in the league. That's s good thing.

If Leary doesn't get healthy quick he might stay on the bench. Me personally thinks our best 5 is Smith, Martin, Fred, Collins and Leary( no order) but looks like it's either Collins or Leary and then Free
