From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

“We don’t have to make that decision and haven’t,” Jerry Jones said. “I don’t have to and don’t want to.”

Agreed about it being fair.

What was left unsaid was when that decision has to be made. That begged for a follow up question.

I'd like to see Columbo compete in camp but he may not get that chance depending upon all the money factors.

I think Jerry would rather have Tyron Smith make the decision for him.

Sounds good. I like Columbo, if money doesn't turn out to be a problem, I have no problem with him as a back up, mainly because hes a great guy AND he can be resting most of the time, and could probably be a good backup...right?

I don't want him cut. He might not be able to give us a full game every week for even a half of a season, but he's an invaluable back-up in the event of injury.

I still want to keep him for special situations such as when we run that heavy overload run formation with 3 offensive lineman to one side of the center. I want to put Marc out there on the weak side instead of the TE we use now.

Free Smith Kosier Gurode Davis Columbo

That's a lot of meat on a running play.

I think the 2.5mils bonus is due within 15 days of the new league yr, so it may be quite some time before they actually have to do anything.

I just dont see them paying him this bonus though.

So hes saying I'm not going to say it right now but yea he's gone soon

If 2010 rules stick around like most think they will for this season, then no salary cap means Jerry should keep whoever he wants.
That being said, he needs to go get us Huff and another interior lineman I would imagine so if T Smith shows his worth early no one at the ranch would be too dissapointed in saving some cash on Colombo.

And, if 2010 rules are to be used, he can get RID of whomever he wants with no penalty (R.W., Barber, - the high salary cap guys, etc.......)

i do not see us keeping columbo at all. the third tackle that dresses for game day has to play special teams. i do not think that columbo will be able to do so. i might be wrong in that. now if columbo is a starter still smith will be able to run enough to play special teams.

Two things will govern Marc Colombo's fate:

1. Tyron Smith beating him out in training camp
2. Sam Young winning the swing tackle role

Colombo has lost much of his lateral movement. He loses too many battles to capable, speedy pass rushers on Tony Romo's right side.

If Smith comes in as a rookie and demonstrates that he can hold up a pass rusher for even slightly longer than Colombo, he's getting knocked back to a backup role. He's not an option at center as starter or backup, so scratch that. He does not run well enough, so he cannot pull effectively on traps, counters or sweeps. Starting or backing up at guard makes him a liability as well.

Should Smith elevate to number one right tackle, Colombo is looking at swing tackle duty. Young is no longer a fresh rookie. This is where Hudson Houck's evaluation is key. If Houck believes Young is a solid swing tackle, that's it for Colombo. He's not going to fall onto the practice squad.

This offensive line needs Colombo's spirit, but he's facing an uphill climb which his knees fail him if Smith and Young prove they are both capable right away. I feel for him in his situation. He's kinda like Achilles with an arrow in his heel, but there are two arrows in both knees in his case. His warrior's body betrays him.

i'd like to see him as spot backup for a year and see if he 'recovers' anymore or if limited time helps him be who he used to be when he is on the field.

thats what I think

I am also in favor of keeping him if it doesn't break the bank. We took a tackle because we didn't have enough young talent on the line, but as everyone says we don't have good backups either. He knows the system, and can jump in if someone gets hurt. I say until someone better comes along he adds some great depth.

I really respect Columbo's toughness and attitude. I would love to see him stick in a backup role. He could also hellp Smith adjust to the NFL. I'm sure Columbo has some tricks he could pass onto our 20 yr. old prodigy. On the other hand, the best thing that could happen with the team is that he's cut for two reasons: 1) Smith proves from the get go that he's ready to step in and start 2) Young proves he's ready to contribute as a swing tackle. If those two things come to pass, we're set at the tackle spot, but it would make Columbo a roster casualty.
