Jones maintains unwavering support for Romo

By Tom Orsborn - Express-News

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones remains steadfastly committed to Tony Romo even after his meltdown in Sunday night's 33-31 loss to the New York Giants.

“We have all the confidence in the world in Tony Romo,” Jones said Tuesday on his weekly radio show.

Playing before an NFL regular-season record crowd of 105,121 in the opening game for Cowboys Stadium, Romo threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten and ran for another score. But he also had three interceptions, which the Giants converted into 21 points, and a 29.6 passer rating on 13-of-29 accuracy for 127 yards.

The woeful performance shattered confidence that Romo would make good on his offseason vow to improve his ball security. Romo finished last season with 21 turnovers in 13 games.

Still, Jones stands firmly behind Romo. A big reason: his ability to bounce back.

“You'd like for him not to have a day like that,” Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas-Fort Worth, “but when everybody is pointing fingers, when it didn't go good, then you want someone who can walk into that huddle in the next snap at practice, the next snap in the ballgame and walk out there and cut and shoot and play like they just won the Super Bowl. That's a great quarterback.”

In 2006, Romo followed a 58.8 passer rating in a loss to New Orleans with a 113.9 rating in a win over Atlanta. Last season, he had a 113.8 rating in a win over the Giants after recording a 44.9 rating the week before in a loss to Pittsburgh.

“(Quarterback) is certainly a physical position, and you've got to have the physical skills, but, at the end of the day, it's got to be someone that has a tough skin, that's got a high level of willpower,” Jones said. “Someone that can say, ‘Look, I didn't play well that play, that game,' and come back and play outstanding. ... The greatest of them all had many days as rough as Tony had Sunday.”

The odds would seem to favor Romo and Dallas (1-1) recovering against Carolina (0-2) at home Monday night. Matt Ryan had 220 yards on 21-of-27 passing with three TDs and an interception in Atlanta's 28-20 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

But even if Romo has another 300-yard game like he did in the season-opening win over Tampa Bay, it likely won't silence critics. One of them, Cowboys legend Tony Dorsett, questioned Tuesday why Romo got so big so fast.

“I don't know why on God's Earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League,” Dorsett told Fox Sports Radio. “Tony is very young in his career. Not to say you can't be young in your career and be a superstar because you've got one up there in Minnesota in Adrian Peterson.

“But the thing is this: You have a guy who hasn't done much, and quarterbacks in the NFL, most of them go through this growing curve. He hasn't gone through that growing curve, but he was anointed this great player all of a sudden. Now he's having to live up to that. And obviously Tony has some deficiencies.

“But he's a good player who's still learning how to play in the NFL, and I think the media has given him too much credit for doing nothing. He hasn't done anything really in the NFL to deserve all the recognition and visibility he's gotten so far.”

Jones takes loss hard: Jones' emotions ran high after the Giants spoiled the coming-out party for Cowboys Stadium.

“I had a tough time in some areas not being overly critical because I was mad,” Jones said.

But Jones said time has improved his perspective.

“Normally, apart from it being a home game, you don't get that down from a game like we played Sunday,” Jones said.
