Dont you get the feeling that no matter what Jerry did, the media was waiting to rip him. I get the feeling some columnists already had the column written days or weeks ago with blanks to "insert name here"
Get this: Jerry is criticized for hiring an outstanding defensive coach versed in the 3-4.
So he is to discard everything done the past 2 years to develop a 3-4 and start over leaving many extra parts in the form of line backers and misfit defensive ends to revive the 4-3 if he hired someone like Rivera--who by the way is unproven as a head coach but developed a pretty good defense in Chicago. OR did Lovie Smith develop the defense and Rivera tweeked it. I am sure that would have been the criticisms leveled with Rivera as HC or DC.
Phillips now is criticized for being unable to develop a young Qb in Romo and Garrett, who was forced on Phillips is too young and inexperienced vs someone like Turner
No one mentions that Garrett was a hot hire and under time constraints to be hired in a specific time period
Dont let facts get in the way of a good rant
So, say we hire Turner. Immediately criticism is leveled that the defense that collapsed late would be left unattended and Garretts development would be stunted. Cant win
The argument is now being leveled that Phillips or Turner lacked wow factor. How many latest and greatest--especially college coaches have flopped miserably. There is good reason Phillips has been in the league as long as he has.
Now the accusations that Jerry took an embarassingly long time to hire are being thrown out there. Never mind that the Super Bowl dead period was in the midst of the search. So Jerry hires someone before the super bowl and he is accused of attempting to steal the limelight and that he should have waited to interview the hot candidate in Rivera! Cant win.
Now Phillips is being viewed as Jerry puppet. I dont think any hire wouldnt have been viewed as such. It is just the aura and history of Jerry.
So, I vow to ignore what the talking heads say and wait and see
