Lot of chatter in the scouting community about the Cowboys' draft as well, for good reason. They may have landed the best receiver in the draft all the way down at 17, and while everyone has been going crazy about Amari Cooper's deal, the dirty little secret is that he could be tossed aside in 2021 pretty easily. The guarantees are far from iron clad, and the fact is his replacement was already picked less than two months after he re-signed in Dallas. The Cowboys have botched this thing with Dak Prescott, but their draft haul had to impress the QB, and it seems like Jerry Jones is listening to his strong analytics team, which the great Cynthia Frelund of NFL Network tells me is second only to Baltimore's in its resources and prowess (of which I had no idea). Love where Dallas was able to get Neville Gallimore as well.

I don't think Lamb is meant to be Cooper's replacement. We got lucky he was there at 17 and Jerry was probably fueled with a little bit of whiskey spite against Philly too.

I want to see these guys play together for years. This is the best offense in the league. Stop trying to run Coop out of town!

We have an analytics team 2nd only to Baltimore's but Garrett didn't believe in analytics?

You can thank MM......he admitted spending a ton of hours studying the analytic NFL impact during his year off. In fact, prior to interviewing for HC jobs, he had said he would have his own analytic department/staff. Not sure Jerry and Stephen has allowed him to hire and set up as much as he wanted but I'm sure it's a huge part of his program.

Maybe not, but its likely in a couple years we may be deciding on keeping Coop or Gallup. If Lamb performs I expect we will move from one of those two.

I don't know what analytics had to do with this draft, but if it means don't do something stupid then I agree. But the picks were no brainers. In probably 8 out of 10 drafts I can see a situation where none of our first three picks fall to us. Lamb, Diggs, and Gallimore had to be screaming at the top of the board. And positions we needed as well.

Notice how no one hardly said a thing about Coopers contract and how the Cowboys could get rid of it after 2021 until they drafted Lamb? I can't believe how many times I've read about that in the last 48 hours.
they just cant give us credit for anything.

Right. My first time hearing that was yesterday now we hear it nonstop.

Because it's a logical conclusion now with Lamb.

Think about the situation in 2-years:
  • Cooper is 29 y.o on a big non-guaranteed contract with only 6m dead money.
  • Gallup is up for a new contract and probably a more suitable no.2
  • Lamb will be heading into his 3rd year and hopefully demanding the no.1 WR spot.
If Cooper is under-performing his contract cutting him is easy and if he's not it might be that a team offers a trade for Cooper. Clearing 20m from the salary cap, and adding Gallup long-term with a rookie slot WR could easily be the right call.

Analytics? I doubt it. Following the Draft Day Thread here and a lot of people were making the same call for the first 4 rounds. Pretty much everyone chose Lamb and then Diggs. Probably some called the Gallimore pick. Even the armchair GMs here would have made the same picks. I don't deny Jerry and the scouts credit. They made all the right moves and picks based on all the data available on draft day.

The draft just broke in the Cowboys' favor and the Cowboys chose BPA for the most part. All the stars just seemed to align for a few days.

Gallup may end up being the odd man out if he continues to improve. May not be able to afford him. Of couse, jj will probably restructure Cooper if he doesn't cut him

That was written by the reporter. No one expected to land Lamb, so that could possibly make Cooper expendable at some point. That's not a guarantee, it's just a possibility.
