For 10 minutes or so, the dream looked real. Even with millions upon millions upon millions of dollars sunk into Tony Romo, Jerry Jones might take Johnny Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Alas the dream died when Dallas did the smart thing and took Zack Martin. If you listen to Jerrah it was always a pipe dream to begin with anyway. Jones said the Cowboys "didn't spend a lot of time" thinking about drafting Manziel.

"Romo, by contract as well as by commitment, is going to be certainly the quarterback for several years to come," Jones said. "Don't care who we drafted, that's the way it was going to be. So that's what was going through our minds. That's why we didn't spend a lot of time considering Manziel."

It's nice to see Jones being realistic about this. Taking Manziel would've set back an average franchise another three or four years. The Cowboys finished 8-8 the last three years largely due to them not having strong talent across the board. Throw an extraneous quarterback on the roster -- when Romo can't be cut or traded because of his contract -- and "mired in mediocrity" sounds like an upside phrase.

They would've sold tickets, but it's not like the Cowboys have an unlimited supply of those to go around.

"John Madden once told me when I was telling him about this idea of personalities and being involved with the Dallas Cowboys," Jones said. "He said, 'Jerry, the Cowboys have all the flash, have all the visibility that you could ever conjure up. Make your decisions, get the best players and coaches that win the games. You got all the rest you'd want. You don't need to have big-time flash to be involved in the NFL and be successful in the league.' I've always remembered that.

"No, frankly that [picking Manziel] wasn't even a thought. This was such an obvious football … decision."

It would've been truly, truly glorious if Jones pulled the trigger on Manziel. But it would've also been a massive train wreck for Dallas.

Kudos to the Cowboys for spoiling our fun by doing the smart thing.

They will hitch their wagons to Romos wheel chair till the end. There is no future thought just like there was no future thought when Troy went out. That caused panic and for Jones to reach on QC. He is following that same pattern. This isn't about just Manziel this is about the draft overall and the next 2 years and beyond. I seriously hope they consider a Aaron Murray or a Jimmy G. I would hate to think that Mettenbooger is on the radar late as I think he will be a huge failure.

Some have to put aside their man crush of Manziel and realize the Cowboys were right in passing him over.

If this team can't make some sort of run next year, it's probably Garrett's last year and you'll have a new coaching staff. I want that staff picking their next QB, not have it the other way around where we take Manziel, then have to find a coaching staff to fit around a kid that in one year we still wouldn't have any clue can actually play in the NFL.

Do people actually think Manziel will be an effective QB in this league? He'll make a few dazzling plays in the early years of his career but he'll make far more mistakes. The guy is not a good QB. If we were to take QB, it should've been Bridgewater or Bortles.

I don't agree on Bridgewater. Bortles yes Aaron Murray yes and Jimmy G yes. I believe those guys have a much higher ceiling then Bridgewater. If anything I think Aaron is more inline with what Dallas likes at QB like TR. Their games are very similar IMO

Is Murray supposed to be a 4th round pick? If we get him and he sits for a few years and then takes over for Romo then I have no problem with that!

If Jerry and company are that confident, it makes me feel a bit better about Romo's back.

How Jerry worded his comments in response to if he though JF was a great player makes me think that there might have been some difference of opinions on drafting him. I almost think that JG and the scouts were putting out fires as Jerry might have been trying to burn the building down.

The Cowboys made the right football decision.

The Cowboys have just become ridiculously boring.

We don't care about winning anymore anyways so at least entertain me and bring in Manziel.

Keeping Garrett as the coach and Jerry staying as GM so his ego doesn't get harmed lets me know all I need to about our priorities towards winning.

How do you know there is no future thought? There has been one single round so far in this draft. They didn't think any of the QBs was worth their 16th pick(and I agree). They can still be looking at the future by drafting a QB in this draft. What if they draft Mettenberger? They would be doing so with future thought. Isn't that what you want? Even if it is a qb you don't like(I don't like Mettenberger, either) it would still mean they are considering the future. And if it isn't just about Manziel and about the next two years and beyond, there will be several QBs in next years draft who will be rated higher than some of the guys in this years draft. Dallas can get in position to grab one of them.

You raise great points. When I state they are hitching their wagons to Romo I'm doing so because if what is being said by Jerry he states as much in this very article. He states as much with his comments leading up to the draft about his current crop of QBs on the team. I've been a huge advocate of Aaron Murray and I have been for a few years now. But I don't see Dallas taking one now and I see a forced pick next year on a QB that isn't that good. Next years crop doesn't impress me

despite all the hope from the select few, many knew it simply wouldn't happen. i even put up a $20 bet on facebook that said if manziel is there, the cowboys won't take him and while the "jones will always do something stupid" crowd insisted manziel would be a cowboy, no one took the bet. no one after the pick came back and gave jones credit either. some people just hate jones so much that they insist he will always do something stupid and when he fails to meet that expectation, they just say "well he will later".

how convenient.

i also said martin could likely be our pick after donald was taken and after martin was our pick, new threads were started slamming jones in other ways but no "hey, i was wrong". i have no idea how the manziel crowd on this site is reacting cause the sheer infatuation was too much for me and i wound up putting many on ignore just to save my own sanity.

i do believe the cowboys know they have to address the qb situation. whatever is said about orton i'm sure there's disappointment in him not being at the "what do voluntary mean" workouts. i was disappointed in him for that cause if you want to be seen as a leader, you take every opportunity to lead. is he going to be here when it counts? beats me but don't count on it is my gut feeling. weedon? not even sure why we went there unless someone lost a bet.

so who's out there? not a whole lot to be honest. brady quinn, sennaca wallace, grossman, garrard, and hey, kitna. :) so looking at the list they likely just rolled the dice on who they felt was the best on the "C" list. all that said, yes. i can see the cowboys drafting a qb but not today. if houston takes another carr, i'll be mildly surprised but savage is overrated and the next set will be gone before they can pick again. if they don't pick carr, then i have to believe there's legs to the rumor of getting the pats backup and i don't see that as bad for them.

if carr was there at 47 would i pick him? no. we've got way too many areas of definite need to simply pick a non-starter to groom.

i also don't want us to trade up and lose say a 5th round pick cause then tomorrow i'll be bored to tears waiting on the 7th round of fun. but if that's what it takes to *hopefully* plug a hole, i guess the wait won't be so bad.

hopefully, now that the hype is over, people can move on but unfortunately i see some just lamenting the lack of their pet cat coming to dallas after selling their hopes and dreams on it. thankfully, i won't see it.
