This is the way I see it. Stephen wants Dez gone. Jerry is the sentimental one and wants to keep Dez around. They have probably been fighting about this a lot. So Stephen told him that if he is going to stay, he better take a pay cut. We will see how this one plays out. Personally, I will be surprised if Dez isnt on the team. I would be very happy if he was not. Simply because it would not only show me that they are doing what that need to do, but it would be moving on and that is exactly what needs to happen. Whether you think this team would be better THIS year with Dez or not.

I disagree.

The problem is not all Dez.

Is he overpaid? Probably not in this market.

But the Cowboys have a coaching problem. Moving on from Dez will not make us a better team. Getting better in our scheme is what will fix half of these problems.

Dak deserves some of the blame as well.

Dez can't drop passes at the rate he did a year ago and I wouldn't expect that. Dez has good hands. Last year was flukey.

IF we can get money back from him then that would be great but it won't fix the problem which is our predictable offensive scheme that pigeon holes it's players and makes life easy for opposing DB's.

Bottom line is Dez is an extremely talented WR

We're a better team with an engaged and disciplined Dez

He needs a real HC to discipline him

My best guess is that Stephen doesn't want him gone as much as he wants him paid commensurate with his production, and knows that number is going to probably be too low for Dez. Which amounts to almost the same thing as wanting him gone.

Jerry knows he can get some concessions since he's got guaranteed money and a possible extension to work with. He'd prefer to keep Dez because his value as an NFL figurehead and because he brings attention to the Cowboys.

Dez is going to want to stay a Cowboy, but he won't take less than whatever his side thinks market worth is going to be, and they'll have a generous interpretation of market worth.

I think he *probably* ends up staying at a number that represents a cap hit of ~75% of his current hit and with an effective guarantee for a minimum of this year and next. But this one could go a lot of different ways before it's all said and done.

On a side note, all the talk about him working on routes is just flame-fanning because people like to talk about Dez. For years we heard about Tony working hard with Dez to get him familiar with both the routes and his sight adjustments. It's great to hear Dez is working with an outside coach and all, and that Lal specializes in technique. It's all fluff. The real progress will happen when Dak and Dez figure out how to work together. Which really should be happening about now, anyway.

So...couldn’t you have said this in one of the other Dez threads...

Only on this site would downgrading a position group make some happy. The receiving Corp without Dez is one of the worst in the league. But as long as they’re cheap I guess?

Getting rid of dez saves money, it doesn’t make you a better team
Getting rid of dez means two of your top 3 picks are going to offense so you really can’t want dez gone and a defensive draft
We don’t have a true starting left guard and if we cut dez we will be drafting a WR very high

So why do you think we are better without Dez? I would rather lose the OC that Dez. Hopefully, our new receiver coach will teach Linehan. A few plays from this century.

throwing good money after bad is never the answer. the reality of dez is simple to judge. the last 3 years he's been a jag. nothing more. his elite years are behind him now. bad route runner. drops too many balls. prone to tantrums when things don't go his way. I suspect daddy and son are in agreement regarding dez and the cowboys. he's probably gone as soon as the draft's over.

I guess I'm the only one tired of this whole Dez/JJ standoff...

You are exactly right. Romo was an experienced QB and hide a lot of the offensive coaching problems. Dak did well in year one but the coaching never changed to help him in year two. The players coming in or out won't change the final outcome if the coaching doesn't improve. Dez had issues but is not totally to blame.

I will actually be glade when Dallas turns the whole entire page from the holdovers, and that includes Dez and witten. Wittens a good guy but I'm really tired of both of them on this team.

Every interview I’ve heard with Stephen indicates he wants Dez gone. He’s brought up the money Dez is making and that his production is not living up to it and several times he’s mentioned the lack of chemistry between Dez and Dak. He talked about Dak wanting his receivers to run precise routes which was a shot at Dez. He’s talked about the distraction Dez can cause. Stephen was the one who wanted TO gone and he and Jerry argued about it. Stephen won and TO was gone. Stephen is much more candid about players than Jerry.

Dez is not the problem. I don't believe there has been any tension between Stephen, Jerry or Dez. You and other uninformed people want Dez gone. Get the QB right and Dez will be doing what he did with Romo

Follow the money....simple fact is that Dez is costing about 10% of the entire team salary cap. Anyone running a business paying someone 10% of all the salaries to a single employee that doesn't produce at the level they need to, is going to find a way to ultimately "get rid" of that employee whether they like him or not. I think they all like Dez but it is a business.

They should get rid of the coach and keep Dez.

Getting rid of Dez will not make us better.

He may not be worth the money but he's not worth the money because we have a coach that doesn't know how to get the ball in his hands.

This staff will depend on Zeke and the OL getting us to 3rd and short. If the passing game is to be relied on we will never get over the hump with this staff.
