Jerry teleconference summary

So I am not a season ticket holder but, I called into the teleconference anyway. If I wasn’t in the military I would have season tickets and so I felt I deserved to listen in lol. So here is what I heard from the teleconference.

First of all, our fan base is full of ignorance. It is very rare that I find a fan that is true blue. Most people call themselves fans but, complain about every aspect of the team. Some of the questions were flat out asinine. One fan asked if we were; wait for it, “interested in Tebow” so we would finally have a decent no. 2 QB and someone who could step in if Romo goes down. Another fan asked if we would try to acquire picks to draft Manziel next year. He said he can’t talk about college players.

Jerry spent time to elaborate on the decision to pick Frederick. He was asked why not Eifert and then Fred in Rd 2 if the C/TE was the plan. He said that Escobar’s pass catching ability gave them the ability to pass on Eifert and not risk losing Frederick before the 47th pick. He said we will have a lot of 2 and 3 TE sets like we did against Baltimore that will make teams chose whether to defend the run. Baltimore never adjusted to the Cowboys 3 TE set and therefore they had a huge day rushing. This is the goal is to exploit teams through mismatches.

Jay Ratliff was a topic of discussion. The 4/3 is going to benefit him because he will win one on one matchups and the front will allow D-Ware to rush the passer 100% of the time putting him against T’s one on one or even TEs sometimes. He said that Kiffin told them his D will put the secondary in position to make plays. The safeties do not have to have range because his D puts them in the right angles to make plays.

Romo will game plan Tuesdays. Said this draft is the first that each pick could be active week 1 based on their potential to contribute now. Matt Johnson and Barry Church are the favorites to be starters at safety if he had to pick now but, Wilcox will compete for a starters role. Didn’t mention Allen at all!

Finally, and perhaps the most important is the Doug Free situation. He said it is being addressed and that they have a decision to make there. They are excited about Parnell and that Woicyk measured his punch as the strongest out of any OL he has been around, says something. It sound like they are hoping Free takes a pay cut to spell Parnell kind of opposite of what they did at the end of the season. Not one Clabo question.

That is all I can remember off the top of my head. Have at it.

From what I heard he said he liked Parnell and they wanted to address the Free situation. I got off about 10 minutes early but, up until then not from what I heard.

I was on the call myself since I'm a season ticket holder but I never got to ask my question. I'm pretty sure they were monitoring the type of question and they decided who was allowed to ask Jerry questions. No way they were going to allow anyone to grill Jerry. It was just for publicity.

All the questions that got through were softballs.

This is the reason I have to give Spags a break sometime. Mickey can get abrasive and be too much of a company man at times, but if you look at the kind of comments he has to deal with of a day to day basis, I can see why he sometimes comes off as he does. He has to answer some pretty amazingly stupid questions.

I think picking Eifert would have been a disaster. There's a big difference between spending a 1st rounder on a guy and a second rounder. With Witten still being the guy (no matter what we want to say about 2 TE sets) burning a 1st on another TE would have been just terrible. I'm still angry about spending even a 2nd rounder, but that's just me watching us fail with Fasano and again with Bennett. If he pans out and we can finally achieve success with the elusive TE pass catching duo, then great. Color me skeptical.

Ratliff: Less wear and tear + solid rotation - age = Better Production out of Rat. Thumbs up.

I think the Allen signing was strictly a safety net. They may have hopes that one of the young guys can jump right in, but it's still good to have a fall back plan.

Who knows if signing Clabo is one of our options. We are keeping that pretty close to the vest. By talking up Parnell, that makes only one thing clear. Doug Free will not be here at his current salary. That is a good thing. If he's here for less or gone doesn't matter to me so long as his impact on the cap is lessened. We can be pretty confident of that.

Actually he mentioned both Free and Parnell splitting that role. And he mentioned how Parnell splitting it with Free last year really helped Free out. I have no idea what he was talking about. It sounds like they are still trying to decide what to do with free.

Most of the conference call was Jerry doing is normal crazy talk. It was neat seeing the fans interact with him though. The calls were real.. they were just screened big time and he certainly did get softballs.

So basically Free is going to be asked to take a pay cut and if he balks, they cut his arse and make Parnel the starter?

He really didn't say. It does sound like they are trying to do something with Free, either trade him or get him to take a pay cut etc. It also sounds like even if he does stay here, they will have he and Parnell take turns at RG during games.

Sorry, but I laughed out loud at this. I can't imagine anyone wanting Doug Free. His incompetence is well known throughout the league. Hell, I was frequenting a Jaguars' forum a while back and I remember someone going out of their way to make a thread about how bad of a tackle (or how quickly he declined) Free is. My guess is that Free will take a pay cut and be the backup to Parnell, which is fine with me.

I mistakenly said "trade" meant to say cut him. Yeah, that is funny saying trade when he was the worst RT in the whole league.

You left out about 4000 "Uhs", you should be his spokesman, what he says is much more coherent and palatable coming from you.

On Talking Cowboys today they were saying that Free balked at technique changes all year not using them in games. That makes sense considering some of the godawful foot work we saw. Crossing your feet and falling down is about as bad as it gets. Anyway, they started splitting snaps and surprise surprise he started using the technique and playing better.

I don't know how to feel. My initial thought is to cut his butt. If you won't take coaching then he needs to go. I probably settle on that idea but it also means that he might not be a lost cause.

Sounds like Rat will be at the 3 and Hatcher will either rotate at the three (my preference) or be at the one.

A few of months ago I posted that as my theory on why Free improved after Parnell started splitting time with him. I got the idea after a brief interview with Free during the season where he seemed annoyed with the new requirements from Callahan.
