Jones said he would like to sign both to long-term deals.

on Austin an Sensabaugh

let them play this year see how they do - make them earn the money

I don't mind them letting Sensabaugh play the year out but they should be looking to sign Austin to a long term deal this year. I imagine they will allow him to prove he deserves the big contract first. Same as they did Romo.

I don't doubt that is what they have in mind for Austin. Sensabaugh is a bit more of a known product in the league. I have no problem with Jerry stating they would like to sign both to long terms deals. What is he suppose to say as Miles agent is looking for a longterm deal? No where has Jerry said it has to be right now.

Don't see the problem. He wants to sign them because he thinks they have earned their money.

What's the problem?

I think the OP has a fear of a Hamlin situation happening again. One good year, big pay day, then a drop off.

I guess it depends on the money involved. The OP also has to realize that there are times when Jerry waits to a little bit into the season to see if they continue to do well before agreeing to a big new contract ala Ware and Romo.

I guess the point is Romo did not get his deal until mid-season..and Romo had proven just as much as Miles had proven to this point....PLUS Romo plays a more prominent position.

Fears are justified but if they are going to go the way of Hamlin, waiting until the season plays itself out won't stop it. It will just be next year that they decide to call it quits.

I don't think you'll get that from Austin. Sensy I guess you could worry about but I don't think he will get the same kind of deal that Hamlin did.

Maybe but I don't think that's anything to worry about. Romo is earning his check.

With no labor agreement, Jerry is going to wait until they see when and if such a deal between the NFL and NFLPA comes to pass to see where the paramenters are in the new Labor agreement. There is no rush to sign these guys at all to long term deals at this point.

I fail to see how it would go down. The contract was signed during the bye week after Romo had gone 6-1. He only went on to finish 7-2 and win the NFCE for the first time since 1998. The needle was pointing up on his career, not down.

Whoever said Jerry should have waited to sign Romo to a contract needs to remember that Romo would have become a FA after the 2008 season. Now Jerry could have put a tag on him, but given the dearth of quality at the QB position on many NFL teams, I don't doubt for a minute that at least 1 NFL would be willing to pony up 2 first rounders to get Romo.

Now some would say getting 2 first rounders for Romo would be a great deal for the Cowboys. Well, just remember that drafting a first round QB doesn't guarantee he would be successful in his rookie season. Remember the Cowboys didn't have a dominant defense at the end of 2008 & their running game was more based on Romo's passing offense then the other way around.

agree on Sensabaugh, disagree on Austin.

Also, (so far) we haven't signed any of our restricted free agents to long-term deals so it is very possible (depending on the next CBA) that we will go into next off-season with the following players being UNRESTRICTED free agents.

Miles Austin WR
Sam Hurd WR
Alex Barron T
Kyle Kosier G
Pat McQuistan T
Cory Procter C
Marcus Spears DE
Jason Hatcher DE
Stephen Bowen DE
Junior Siavii NT
Gerald Sensabaugh S
Pat Watkins S
Alan Ball S/CB (most likely will still be a Restricted Free Agent)

I was really hoping we would (and we still can)take advantage of this rare uncapped year to sign Austin and one of the DE's to a front-loaded, long-term deal. I don't want to go into next off-season with this many unsigned players.

I agree with letting Sensabaugh play out his restricted tender. Sensy by no means is an elite talent. He definitely improved the SS position last year, but that's not really saying much considering who was starting before him (Roy Williams, Keith Davis, etc).

Austin needs to get his long term deal this year. Name me another "one year wonder" at WR that had a year like Austin did in the prime of their career.

I don’t think it will take elite money to get Sensy signed up long term. He should have a better year with two healthy thumbs, so his price will go up after this season. He is a high character guy, i am not worried about his production after signing.

Austin was grossly underpaid last season. He was not a one game fluke. He saved the Cowboys season. I say pay him now. He too is a high character guy and a hard worker.

Uno...great sig picture...love it.

Having Jimmy and Landry back to back in that one would be cool too but that one stands up great alone.
