Just don’t tell about free agency setbacks to Jones, who says he is happy with what the Cowboys have done and believes they are already a better team than at the end of last season’s 4-12 campaign.

“Yes. Both, to answer the question. Yes,” Jones said at the NFL owners meetings this week in Boca Raton, Fla.

“We’re addressing specific areas that we need —I’m hesitant to use depth, we just need contributions. We’re certainly going to play a lot of guys, and where we’ve brought some of these guys in — whether it be at running back, whether it be defensive line — we need some numbers. And we’re getting them.”

Dallas has the fourth overall selection and will begin the draft with nine picks.

“I don’t want to get that succinct on [No.] 4 — but it really doesn’t rule anything out,” Jones said. “The facts are that 4 is a different kind of decision. That 4 pick, that’d be a pretty extraordinary decision.”

Yet, Jones said they have done enough in free agency to pick the best available player with the fourth overall selection.

“Yes, I think we can,” Jones said.

That answer was followed up by this caveat: Jones said the Cowboys might lean toward position preference over best player.

“Those position preferences are probably areas of quarterback, pressure player and corner,” Jones said. “You might go a position preference over one that's higher on the board.

“I don’t think we have to draft a cornerback. I don't think we have to draft a pressure player. The reason you don't have to draft a pressure player early is because of depth. There is depth in the defensive line. Now the question is whether there is anybody there that is the pressure player without issues.”

Love jerry but this offseason on hasn't been what I was hoping for. If hes really in win now mode hes failed. The object it to resign key players and upgrade via fa. Then get a good draft for the future. We upgraded at dt downgraded at de. Defense has way to many jags and no depth jerry.

There is depth on the defensive line. He said so. Keep on pressing and it looks like you are asking for a damn debate.

Months after calling Hardy an inspirational player and leader, Jones is now mum on a possible return.

“Just leave it like it is, just leave it like it is,” Jones said.

But yet, the same man is saying we have "depth" on the DL.

Gotta Love Jerry one week he says.. We would consider drafting a QB at 4. Next week we not drafting a QB at 4. This week we might be considering drafting a QB at 4.

I've now watched the video. He was referencing taking a RB at 4 when he said the above.

Maybe I'm naive but he just blowing smoke.

At this stage, I question that. Contradicting yourself in a matter of a few weeks is not exactly misdirection. If he thinks it is, that is demented on its own.

Jerry could talk for 30 minutes straight and say nothing and everything at the same time. You would have just as many questions when he's done as you did when he started.

That's his offering in the war room. The assistant gives you a doritos bag ruffle, crunch and some soda slurps. This is what the scouts have to work with.

So QB, DL or DB. Other than some mentions of Jack that's about where we've had it narrowed down to since the end of the season. And speaking of need over someone rated higher on the board, that would only apply to QB. Bosa and Ramsey are in most top 5's that I've seen. The two QB's who some have in the 8-12 range is the only position that would be considered taking a lower rated player.

Here's the issue with the Cowboys. Even if these guys we're going to do the right thing and go QB, they would sit pat and hope that player is there at 4. Hope the Browns don't take him. Hope some other team doesn't jump up and steal him away.
