If I want be a cynic ... Jerry owes Jason about 8-10 million the next two years guaranteed ... so Jason ain't going anywhere ...

Rob had one year left guaranteed at ... your guess, 2-3 mil?

So 9 mil vs. 2-3 mil ... there you go. Which hit do you want to take?

Contract details of Jason's HC deal have never been released, except that it was for four years. But he was making $3.5 million as OC for us (highest salary for asst. in NFL at that time it was said). Then Jason was hired as HC, and maybe made closer to 4 mil the first two years you must figure .. and probably, you would think he got a raise to closer to 5 mil upcoming in years 2013-14 and 2014-15. . .. (Remember Jason was being courted by several teams at the time he was hired as HC or at least the year before, Titans? etc., and probably Jerry paid him accordingly to keep him.)

Jerry's pocketbook speaks. Wade had one year left at about $3 million, plus another mil or so the rest of the '10 season so Jerry didn't hurt too bad when he was let go.

Just remember that Jerry walks around Val Ranch (or used to) and switches off the lights. This explains somewhat why he keeps dead weight on contract around the team. They are "paid for" so why fire them?

(Off topic, our college scouts currently, except for young-but-been-around-forever-Chris Hall, pretty oldtimer Tom Ciskowski and real-old-timer Walt Juliff, if he is still with us that is not sure, were hired in a complete shakeup around 2003-2005 by Parcells and Jeff Ireland. All of our college scout hires were from that period ...). Bryan Broaddus and "Stretch" Smith/ESPN Radio were let go around then. Parcells probably hired most, Ireland a few.

But IMO time for our col scouts to be let go en masse as they haven't done any better than Ireland and Parcell's hires have done at Miami., Being young doesn't mean good even though a road scout is a young man's game ... Of course you could blame it on Ciskowski who sets up the draft board. Your top dog scout must overrule if our scouts suck so it all comes back to Ciskowski ..

Sorry for the OT rant ...

I don't buy that at all. He as a businessman makes so much money because his labor force is price controlled. $5m does not mean quite so much when you gross half a billion dollars.

It's not OT at all. I think you're dead on. Except for Parcells, Jerry has always been cheap on head coaches. As you say, no matter how much money he has, he doesn't like paying millions of dollars to coaches who aren't working for him.

Bottom line, I have no doubt that Garrett's contract plays a role in Jerry keeping him around. Not as much as the family portrait, but a significant role nonetheless.

That's the funniest Jerry comment that I've ever seen.

Garrett's making 4-5 million a year?

Unless you figure he didn't get a raise from the 3.5 mil he was making as OC three years ago.

Xwalker said "That's the funniest Jerry comment that I've ever seen." (about turning off lights to save money that is ...)

Yeah I read this in the 90s. Jerry walked around every night back then switching off lights and stuff to save some dough. I guess he turned up the AC too to save money overnight. That's the truth. I'm not sure if he does it now.

Here's the deal: I don't figure Jerry is such a cheapskate except when he has to pay $8-9 mil dead money to Garrett - PLUS pay a marquis coach like Lovie Smith or someone another $4-5 mil a year on top of that the next two years if Jerry could sign Lovie or someone for a two year contract, not sure what the length of contract is going for now if even a Lovie Smith would take only two years ...

That makes the next two years' head coach about $20 million if Jason were fired .. that is, the new coach's money plus Garrett's dead money ..

Whereas Ryan is owed maybe $3 mil next year? Promote Eberflus at $2 mil a year or something and 3 mil the following year? That's $8 mil the next two years for a DC.

$20 mil for a HC switch next two years vs. $8 mil for a DC switch .. just a guess.

And all of you wonder why Jerry doesn't hire a GM. That's even more millions out of Jerry's pocket ..

Just saying ....

While I'm OP here I want to make one more rant, sort of ..

I think a flaw in our college scouting ... a big one:

I heard this a bunch leaked from scouts last drafts, about why players we drafted lasted a round or two beyond their considered talent:

Here it is: Matt Johnson: injured frequently in college, but our med people see No specific chronic injury that would cut short an NFL career.

D. Coale, see above.

D. Murray, see above.

S. Lee, see above.

B. Carter, see above.

Have I left anyone out?

It's time our scouts understand that if you miss a year or years in college, BUT the injuries have healed and they are ready for the NFL ....

What was it that Satchel Paige said about "Injury Prone" ? ..... Apparently our scouts don't understand "injury prone." ...

Wonderful!!! .. All the guys we draft have a) High Upside. b) Injuries not chronic according to the Cowboys doctors. c) Will have a long injury-free NFL career!

Dam, are our guys stupid? I think of Ray Rice, who has never been injured much.

Maybe we NOT take a flyer **TO TAKE A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OVER OTHER TEAMS THAT DON'T WANT TO RISK A RISKY PLAYER** and just get guys that are real stout and don't ever get injured, even though they ain't so spectacular ...

Yeah I am surprised because Jerry was so happy that we signed OL Ron Leary, a degenerative injury at little cost. Undrafted FA.

Yet we drafted all these cats last April that missed their senior seasons for injury.

It seems like common sense has been lost by our draft people, in an attempt to gain a competitive advantage ... Hasn't worked and won't work.
